No active 744s in the fleet left in the old livery, besides one or two retired aircraft in the desert.

Can those retired 747's in the dessert be reactivated?

Retired means the aircraft is no longer part of United's fleet. It could be reactivated, yes, if someone else buys the aircraft assuming it is airworthy.
Now if it's stored, on the other hand, then yes it could be reactivated by United if they need the aircraft.
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.

Quoting 28L28L (Reply 4): Was 106UA painted in the current scheme, or retired in the old one?
Are all stored, not retired though N185UA and N192UA have been stored for over 5 years, the former for almost 10 years now. The majority of the other stored were delivered in '96 and '97

Just got an e-mail saying that N194UA is at Kimhae Int'l in S. Korea undergoing mx @ Korean Air Tech Center. Unconfirmed at this point. Airfleets has it stored since 08/09.

Confirmed that N194UA flew from Socal Logistics to Guam on the 26th of April.
Anyone familiar with UA ops know if this is proofing/mx to reenter service or if they're getting ready to give this bird off?

Quoting Conti764 (Reply 11): On a side note: I assume United is going to halt all the repaints untill the merger with CO is fully approved?
I'm still putting money on an aircraft from each airline's fleet getting the new c/s to physically show that unity in the coming weeks. Pictures do the merger no justice, believe me.

They wont do anything till the merger is approved by the stock holders. they *may* do a paint freeze but other than that they will do biz just as if there was no merger, because the stcok holders may not go along with it.

Yes United wil be bringing back at least one 747 out of the desert to support summer flying.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

A Continental Elite representative said to me while booking a flight and chatting about the merger: "our new flat beds in Business First are better than United's First Class seat and much better than United's Business lie flat's" I told her as wonderful as CO is, it will be good to have 4 classes like on the United 747. She said "Sir, the 747 is a very old airplane and you would prefer a 777". I just said "really, thank you"
so I guess a 747 that was stored and being made fly worthy is a bad thing. Perhaps at CO this must be very difficult emotionally. But doesent this mean that UCO will have about 25 747's for a number of years before they finalize a replacement?

As far as I am concerned, the 744 is significantly worse in Y than the 772. The seats are narrower in the 744 (17.2" vs 18") and it lacks seatback video. It is great in C or F but I greatly prefer the 772 in Y. The 744s are old but UA's oldest planes are the 757s. Like any other plane, if the interiors are refurbished the could be just as up to date and comfortable as a brand new plane but the UA 744s are on their way out. I miss the old 9 abreast 747s. 10 abreast makes it undesirable to fly in.

Not all of them are, pay attention to the delivery dates of UA's 744, it spreads from 1989 to 2000, the grey and blue livery already in place by 1998. Therefore, at least 10 of those only been thru 2 liveries.

But don't forget CO's 777 are lack of E+, 31" of legroom flying EWR-HKG is not fun either, even though it has PTV.

IIRC,UA is proofing a new leather Y product.
It's entire domestic first F is getting revamped with leather (same seat, new covering), and while the product itself is dated, the added leather does improve the seat comfort immensely.
I like the new Y product with AVOID, but don't like the idea of 3-3-3 in the T7s.

If I remember right the Blue/Grey UA livery came out in 1992 or 1993 so I'd have to assume that most of them were actually delivered in Blue/Grey and not the old Red/Orange/Blue.

Yup, I gave them their clearance to Korea, now I didn't know it would go back to UA at the time but it was still nice to just see it leave VCV.
