There was a thread on this for the last World Cup and I am curious what additional capacity and charters will be coming to South Africa for this year's cup?

Will Qantas fly the A380 there?

Historically BA have operated 3 flights a day to South Africa, BA55 and BA57 to JNB and BA59 to CPT. Currently they are operating a third flight to JNB (BA33) five days a week (Days 1,3,5,6 and 7) out of LHR. I believe this flight will continue to operate until the end of the Summer Season on 31 October when it will be withdrawn.

Usually Comair, BA's South African franchise partner, operates eleven flights between CPT and JNB on weekdays and seven and eight on Saturdays and Sundays respectively. In the week commencing 21 June they will operate four extra flights on Monday, 3 extra flights on Saturday, 2 extra flights on the Friday and one extra flight on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. The additional flights are BA6322, BA6326, BA6330 and BA6334 while the established flights on this route are in the range BA6400 to BA6438 (BA6400, BA6406, BA6410, BA6414, BA6416, BA6418, BA6422, BA6424, BA6426, BA6428 and BA6438.)

It is likely that other internal routes linking match cities may be similarly impacted with the flights varying according to the match dates in those cities..

Keeping my fingers crossed, but may be able to make it for a week there in mid June. Prices (accomodations, car rentals, etc.) have been coming down, they were astronomical before; airfare is still a bit high, ~$2k from US East Coast, but then again, it's the usual summer schedule too. MIA-LHR for example is $1k, so double that to get to JNB.

I will be there for two games:

South Africa v. Uruguay (June 16) in Pretoria, and
Slovenia v. USA (June 18) in Jo'burg

Will be tying it in to a trip to visit friends in Namibia, so I will be doing a WDH-JNB flight on June 15, and then JNB to FRA on June 19.

Can't wait! I got to a game in France in 1998 when I was 14 years old, and two games in the USA when I was 10 years old in 1994, but haven't been since.

I doubt it. The Qantas Soccoroos Logo Jet 747-438 VH-OJS will be carrying the Australian team. That is a charter flight with seats open for the public for sale and to be won in competitions.

I'm already here   !

I'm going to two games in my home town of Port Elizabeth :

Greece vs Korea Republic and England vs Slovenia.

I'll hopefully be able to snap a few charters that come into PLZ airport although I'm not sure that we'll get any heavies as the runway isn't long enough, still a 260% rise in traffic will be nice to see.

Correct. It should have the flight number LH2010.

Lufthansa annouced 3 weeks ago that they will be launching the A380 in the FRA-JNB route as of the 1st November 2010, this will be the airlines third A380 route after NRT and PEK.

I've seen a list of confirmed vistors which will be landing at Lanseria airport (north west of Johannesburg) during the World Cup. Some very interesting aircraft, mainly large biz jets such as Global Express, Gulfstream, Dassault Falcon's etc, also some A319CJ's, an Airbus A340-200 and a Boeing 757-200 (which is apparently going to visit most host cities)...

They are also running several red-eyes (2AM departures) on days before certain matches. As an example, they are flying JNB-DUR and CPT-DUR on June 25 in the wee hours to satisfy demand going to the Brazil v. Portugal match.

I'm sure you can find some specialty travel agents doing stuff - there are people who specialize in sports travel, and this is the biggest sporting event in the world. The question is, are they worth the premium? That depends on you as a traveler and your knowledge and comfort zone of international travel. I would do it myself, as I am (well, my Namibian friends and I are doing it together, but without a travel agent), and we had no problem. Then again, we know southern Africa and what to expect pretty well seeing as we were...uh, ya know...raised in southern Africa

Will be flying BA´s 747´s in J thanks to AAdvantage Miles. Will be in SouthAfrica from June 10th until July 14th.

Have tickets to follow Spain until the Quarterfinals (or other team is Spain doesn´t make it that far), those are 5 tickets (3 first round + 2 second round) and also scored tickets for the World Cup Final at JNB on July the 11th. Once in JNB, South Africa, will use BA to get to Durban and Cape Town. It is good to be Emerald with One World   , LOL

To get to Europe from America, will be using IB to MAD and then to LHR, staying there two days before flying down to SA. I managed to get a ticket just after BA´s Union Strike is supposed to end (june 9th).

Me too...I was successful with a TST-5 Category 1...Following Spain...Could not take off three weeks off, so I will miss the first game vs Switzerland in Durban. Made up nicely, able to get single tickets for 5 other games! Mexico vs Uruguay; USA vs Algeria; Slovakia vs Italy + 2 other round of 16 matches on June 26 and June 27. I have a rental car, if you need a ride to Rustenburg or Pretoria (or even to Ellis Park or Soccer City). Flying to CPT on Kulula (will go to CPT, even if Spain finishes 2nd in its group, and then fly to Port Elizabeth for the QF match...However, the odds are with Spain finishing 1st in Group H. (but you never know...)
