I noticed a jet in FL380 crossing Reykjavik, Iceland last tuesday (27 may) with a very strange and unusual curve in the trail
I had no camera but I did an image in photoshop of this...

It didn´t change heading, just made a curve and continued the same heading
Does anyone know the reason why the aircraft took a detour like this?

(additional info: most aircrafts crossing Iceland, go east-west or west-east.... this was heading south (180 degree)

Who knows? Maybe the crew wanted the pax to be able to look down and see the volcano..... assuming it was a passenger plane.

Well, yes. Chemtrails AND volcano fumes. What a toxic combination. We're all doomed.

Did you see the plane actually turn or it just kept going straight?

Could just be a stronger wind at that one point. I've seen something similar to that before.

From my first impression, it looks like a rather thin contrail, maybe from an executive bizjet than from a heavy - Apparently, this tends to be a tight detour to observe something on the ground - the Eyjafjoll volcano maybe ?

Actually I´ve noticed aircrafts crossing Iceland at flightradar24.com going straight over Eyjafjallajökull and than bank towards Reykjavik

Eyjafjallajökulll is about 140 km east from Reykjavik

Is this for real?? There are people out there convinced that contrails are chemicals being dumped by military agencies all over the earth for some nefarious purposes? I thought I had heard everything, but this is just too much.

When upper winds catch the contrail they usually get a feather shape, but still it is my best bet. I think it's nicer when contrails form smoke rings though

I would suspect that the aircraft in question is doing a slight dogleg of track in order to arrive over his next oceanic point at the prescribed time as given to the pilot by oceanic control.

I can't think of any commercial flight that goes heading 180 from Iceland. It should either be Russian or US Air Force from Thule.

How do you know it was at FL380?

I think that there was traffic that zone has too much traffic and i think some controllers may be comanding him to move to the south area and the curve i think it was the wind he may be trying to skeep some wind and i dont know once agan i say thats what i think.

Im in the camp of people who think it was simply winds that caused a bend in the contrail. Note that the op said traffic was north/south, and if there are any prevailing westerly winds even in a narrow band that can do that to a contrail, and not break the cohesion of the contrail. And not all upperlevel winds are at a high velocity either.
