From The Albany Times Union:

MONTREAL FLIGHTS IN HOLDING PATTERN

CLAIRE HUGHES Business writer
Section: BUSINESS, Page: E1

Date: Saturday, October 9, 1999

A proposed takeover of two Canadian airlines has stalled plans by one of the carriers to offer service between Albany and Montreal. Air Nova, a division of Air Canada, was set to begin offering flights between Albany and Montreal as of Nov. 1, said Doug Myers, spokesman for Albany International Airport. Now airport officials don't expect word on the Canadian carrier's updated plans until at least early next year, Myers said.

Onex Corp. wants to buy Canadian Airlines and Air Canada, which are both struggling financially, and merge them into a single, profitable operation, the Associated Press reported Oct. 1.

Air Nova did not return calls for comment on its plans to offer service in Albany.

The disappointing news comes on the heels of Shuttle America's decision to raise fares and cut back on flights to and from Albany. A spokesman for the discount carrier, which added Albany to its destinations April 6, told the Times Union earlier this week that Shuttle America had been disappointed with passenger volume in Albany.

The carrier's reduced fares -- as low as $49 for one-way fares to Buffalo -- were credited with bringing US Airways prices down, too, by as much as 71 percent.

Airport officials have been working to attract new airlines to increase competition in an attempt to drive fares down.

Shuttle America is one of three carriers that airport officials have attracted to Albany since the facility completed its two-year, $184 million modernization project last year. The other two are Delta Express and USAir's Metrojet service.

Still, a study conducted by the airport shows fares to and from Albany are on average 12 percent above the national average for airline fares, Myers said.

I don't think AC even offers ALB YYZ service, so this story seems pretty dated to say least. Or perhaps ALB ws one of the hanful of new northeastern destinations either strating or resuming by AC from YYZ, I know Syracuse was but do not know if ALB was included.

Yes AC operates YYZ-ALB about 3 times a day, using Air Georgian Beech 1900Ds.

When that article was written in 1999, the Canadian airline industry was a disaster with CP close to collapse and AC's financial situation not much better. It wasn't the ideal time to launch new routes.

Yup 3x daily, I don't know how it survives.

I have flown this route several times in each direction. I think the most I have seen on board at any given time was 7 people including me.

I hope the service continues though. Connecting through YYZ enroute to various western cities has been much more pleasant than via JFK or EWR.
