I was just looking through some pictures and came across this one:

The caption says it is going from YYZ to YUL, on a 77W! That is only 274 nautical miles! Obviously this is a real flight but why is it flown? Repositioning purposes most likely?

Maybe just local pilot training flights before putting it on the normal rotations.

The date of the photo is less than 2 weeks after delivery.

From the date that is right after the 777 started service. They were doing crew familiarization runs. In April 2007 the daily cycle for the 77W was LHR-YYZ-YUL-YYZ-LHR. I was on the same plane, same route on April 8th (day before photo), and the departure and arrival videos are on YouTube.

Largest currently scheduled on YYZ-YUL is the 767-300 i believe... though they have operated pretty much every type on that route at some point. Both YYZ and YUL are hubs and MX bases so the need to reposition aircraft is real.

Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

Also for connecting traffic and repostioning of widebodies for longhaul flights.....I could be wrong though.

I think the only current scheduled widebodies (763) on YYZ-YUL are the domestic sectors of the YYZ-YUL-GVA and (starting June 12) the new YYZ-YUL-BRU flights, departing YYZ at 1700 (BRU) and 1800 (GVA), and the YUL-YYZ sectors of the same flights westbound, departing YUL at 1400 (BRU) and 1600 (GVA).

Many years ago (about 1985 or so) I was on a business trip and coming home to YUL on a Rapidair shuttle. It was Grand Prix weekend, on a late Friday afternoon, and I took the last available seat on a 747-100!!!
