GA is flying to AMS via DXB from their CGK hub starting tonight using their newest addition in the fleet - The Airbus A330-200. It will depart Jakarta as GA88 at 8:40pm (+7 GMT) and arrive at Dubai at 2:00am (+4 GMT) before leaving for Amsterdam at 3:15am (+4 GMT) and arriving at 8:00am.
This seems a great milestone for Garuda, I can't wait to try their new J and Y class on the A332 one day!
The route will be operated by a 77W when they arrive later this year, competing directly with KL who is also using a 77W.

This is great news for Garuda, and for Europe as a whole. And what better gateway could there be but Europe's best intercontinental airport AMS?

Correct me if I am wrong but the last destination in Europe they served before AMS was LGW right?

Hmmm it wasn't long ago when this airline (along with ALL Indonesian carriers) was banned from the E.U. entirely. I wonder if European travelers will remember that when booking their tickets? Garuda could face an uphill battle here winning pax over from KLM and the Persian Gulf carriers...
Flying in the middle seat of coach is much better than not flying at all!

The upgrade to B77W is only planned for early 2011. At that point, the flight should go nonstop as well, while the A332 via DXB will then operate to one or more additional European destinations.

My bad, I misread the article.

CDG was also a Garuda destination.Hope it will be open again ! Garuda has been an old Paris visitor , having flown to LBG with CV990 and DC8s , before DC10s , and before moving to CDG with DC10s and 747s.Their 747-400s never touched down at Paris.

Can I say that this sounds a bit suggestive?
Safety shouldn't be an argument in the choice between KL and GA. All Indonesian carriers were banned in one decision because of lack of confidence in the Indonesian inspection authority. Since then, KL's maintenance dept [sic] has assisted GA in solidifying their procedures in order to prepare for its return to the EU. No reason whatsoever to suggest that their safety standard is now anything below KL's (or any other for that matter).
Better still, I am quite sure that whoever made the final decision to pull GA off the black list has taken a very thorough look into the situation, for fear of backfiring.

Quoting bjorn14 (Reply 13): Is DXB basically a tech stop or do they actually hope to make $$$ with it?
As mentioned in reply 5 also, DXB can be booked on GA, so they make money with this stop also, aside from the fact that it is needed for refueling. So AMS-DXB sees quite some competition now. KL (2x daily), EK (1x daily) and GA (1x daily) all fly this city pair...
"The whole world steps aside for the man who knows where he is going"
I think most of the pax that EK carries travel beyond DXB connecting to Indian/Asian/Oceanic destinations and therefore is not in direct competition with KL and GA.
Next flights: CPH-FRA-CPH: CPH-BKK-MNL-BKK-CPH; CPH-BRU-CPH

Garuda resumes flights to Europe
Move may help attract investors to a US$300m initial public offering
(JAKARTA) PT Garuda Indonesia has resumed flights to Europe for the first time in six years after the European Union eased a ban on the nation's airlines following a series of fatal crashes.

I hope they can make a success of their return to europe, and would love to see their livery back at LON sometime soon.
I did fly GA about 10 years ago however, and (I know things have prob changed in 10 years) but I would be a bit concerned that their cabin service products lagged behind their competitors to that region even then; CX, SQ, EK, KL and given the reputation for safety that indonesian aviation has, this could be difficult.
Best wishes to GA nonetheless, hopefully a new dawn for Indonesian aviation.

The GA inflight product has improved immeasurably on previous offerings and there should be no safety concerns - GA had to demonstrate solid performance in safety to get off that EU blacklist and was, and still is, subject to much scrutiny. All in all a perfectly good service from CGK to AMS. However...
GA management do not seem to realise that, as people have correctly stated in earlier posts, they have a lingering image problem outside Indonesia that needs to be countered by good marketing and a user-friendly sales interface. Once people experience the new product they may be impressed, but the hard battle will be persuading them to experience it in the first place. Within Indonesia GA is top of the pile for reliability, market presence and quality but on European routes they cannot afford to rest on their domestic reputation.
Thus far GA have overpriced tickets on this route, there are no inter-service onward connections available from AMS (and who wants to reclaim baggage and check in again after a longhaul red-eye?), the website remains clunky and GA sales offices are a bit like banks used to be in the old Soviet bloc.
I worry that GA will blow their best chance yet for a return to the EU market by spoiling a ship for a hapeth of tar.

The first one in French says that GA has expressed its interest in joining SkyTeam. Hopefully a Dutch a.netter can tell us what the second link is about.
26 jpiddink: Sure, happy to help you out GA has put all cards on a full Sky Team membership. In that process, it is supported by KL. In January, GA claimed to keep
27 EddieDude: Thanks a lot Jasper. I suppose that if KL has decided to support GA, it has previously discussed the matter with the other SkyTeam airlines, so maybe
28 gffgold: Word has it that EU nationals travelling on the GA flight may receive their visa on arrival (VOA) on board the plane. This cuts out a certain amount o

32 ChrisCruise: Wow, that is a great video! I really enjoyed watching it! Adios, Christian
