How Quiet Are The 787 And 747-8 From The Outside?

With the new engine technology, are they as strikingly quiet from the outside as the A380 sounded? Is it stunning? Will they be as quiet from the inside?

I had a 787 (ZA001) fly directly overhead at under 1000m and it was amazingly quiet. An A320 about a kilometer north and maybe 3000m up flew by a moment later and it was significantly louder.

The 787 also has a very unique noise signature. Even before she came into view, I was expecting a 787 because it sounded like no other airplane I'd ever heard.

As for the 747-8, based on the videos I have heard of her landing overhead, she seems noticeably quieter.

I had the opportunity to experience the take off sounds of both the 787 and 747-8 at Boeing Field a few months back. (Mid-field near the runway) Both were extremely quiet in my perception. In fact, the traffic on the road behind me seemed louder..... Just my opinion, of course.

It should have more of the buzzsaw sound and less of a roar, probably.

Why do Aerospace Engineering students have to turn things in on time?

I find it has more of a howl than anything. I haven't noticed any buzzsaw (a la 757), it sounds like a more quiet version of the 777.

Someone asked me this after the first flight of the 787, when I was standing alongside the runway. It occurred to me when asked that I didn't even think about how quiet it was at the time, because it wasn't anything like the roar I'm used to. So yes, much quieter.

Why yes, in fact, I am a rocket scientist...

Will it the 787 and 747-8 be quieter than the A380 both inside and out. It is amazing how quiet the A380 is on the inside and the outside as well.

Both are creepy quiet. The 747-8F is more shockingly so as it's such a large airplane. I can carry on a conversation at normal volumes as either plane rotates 110 meters away. I can't do that with a 737NG or a G-V.
