Flight Training Commonality - How Much Impact?

News this week that Boeing aims to transition 777 pilots in five days to the 787 and eight days for 757/767 pilots shows how Boeing can differentiate the 787 based on something other than its flight performance and acquisition cost. Obviously, if pilots can train and transition faster to the type, a carrier with a fleet of 777s and/or 757/767s might be more inclined to chose the 787 over a rival bid. Faster training would cost less and put a pilot back in revenue service sooner.

My question: How big of an impact does this element really affect an airline's purchase decision? Do the savings from faster pilot transition significantly alter the analysis in the context of a deal that can run in the billion$ ? Or, is it more of a "icing on the cake" kind of benefit?

Its probably more of an icing on the cake. If an airline is buying a new type its because it has what they want. Capacity, distance, cargo load, etc. If they can train the pilots quicker it just makes it that much better.
