The flights won't be return as ADM as decided to transform YMX into an industrial airport (including the terminal who will be probably a storage hangar). And Ottawa MaCDonald Cartier is expanding and as the $$$$ for it.

I could have seen Montreal building a big airport like that if they were actually planning to replace Dorval, but to build a competing airport that far from the city, I just don't get it. My map shows it to be over 30 miles from downtown!
I suppose that if Dorval is full of passenger planes and cargo ops are severely restricted, then Mirabel might be a possibility. But think how much extra money all the shippers will have to spend on fuel for their trucks as well as all the extra worker hours lost driving the extra distance many times each day, and you can see why Mirabel doesn't make sense -- for Montreal anyway.
Maybe Quebec could build a big new city out there and then Mirabel could be their airport? It would probably be the first time a city was started just to give business to an airport

Mirabel was actually built to replace Dorval. One of the reasons it was built where it was was that the Federal Government wanted it to be between Montreal and Ottawa, so Ottawa could benefit from it as well. The Quebec Goverment was more interested in building it on Montreal's South Shore.
Unfortunately the airport was openned only half built. Only one terminal capable for handling International flights (although it was eventually to be the Domestic terminal once others were built). So they only transfered the Int'l flgihts from Dorval and Montreal was left with a split operation. When the hub system emerged and connections became more and more important, Montreal was left behind with no one wanting to take a 25 minute bus ride to connect to an international flight. I'm not quite sure why the governments gave up on the full project. They just built two runways and a small terminal and gave up. So it never really had a chance as a true airport. The cost to bring it up to standards today would be incredibly high. Even the current terminal would have to be reconfigured because it's not set up very well for todays airline industry.
I hope Mirabel does well as an industrial airport. I could see Bombardier moving all operations up there as they would have almost the run of the airport. Their own Boeing Field.
Dorval has enough room to expand for it to go for at least another 30 years. And who knows what the industry will be like 30 years from now.
