The President of Russia will be in town next week. Might be advance parties to his visit. Also, a Russian warship is coming in today into SF Bay for an Official visit.

That IL-96 looks like an A340 to an untrained eye. Nobody would even notice it's a Russian plane unless you see something like an IL-76 which doesn't look like anything "Western"

Had the Il-76 in PBI of all places last week. Never did find out why it was there. Airport staff said it pulled in with a staff of 13 and stayed for three days.

To me, the IL-86/96 is among the most beautiful planes out theres. With agressive, yet graceful and elegant lines. I wish I could see it in person.

That has got to be one of the most weird comments I've ever read on here. If you are talking about individuals with untrained eyes... then they wouldn't even be able to see the difference between an A340 and a B747. For "trained" people... An A340 is EASILY distinguished from the IL-96.

i totally see what you are saying. i live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and if i drove past SFO on 101 and saw an IL-96 in area Q or something, i could easily mis-judge it for an A340 while driving at 65-75 MPH. you just don't see Ilyushin aircraft at SFO, so with a quick glimpse, i'd probably just be counting engines to see if it was a A330 or 340!

not sure if this is related to the visit of the 96 or the president's visit, but there has been an AN-124 on the ramp at Moffett Field for the last 3 days (6/17/10 i believe). And...there was a C-5 flying at what appeared to be under 3,000 AGL over Palo Alto at about 13:30 local! Now that was a sight to look up and see! i literally pulled over and got out of my car to make sure i didn't run somebody over while paying 0% attention to the road and 100% to the Beast!

Area Q? It was parked a Plot-41. Actually the IL-96 was a regualar in the mid 90's as I supervised the ramp serves and pushed the aircraft out 3 times a week.

The AN-124 is at Moffet all the time. It flys satellites I believe in and out of the NASA and Air Force base down there. Frequenty it will fly Moffet-Fairbanks,AK-home.

And that was a C-17 I beleive flying over the San Carlos Helo Show I beleive. I know some people that went to the show, but they are not sharp in knowing a C-17 vs C-5. Though honestly from a distance even the best of us can't tell.

WTF?!?!?!?!?!  Wow!

I leave San Francisco for 1 week and then we finally get an IL-96 and IL-62 at SFO?
Well aware that they used to fly here back in the 1990s but wasn't in to Soviet/Russian aircraft types yet.
That was also before I joined Airliners.net in 2000.

Caught the Il-76 at SFO this morning. Didn't see any other Russian metal though but am hoping to catch the Il-96 sometime this week:

I guess for untrained eyes it is really easy to mix up A-340-200 and IL-96-300.
IL is shorter and looks thiker.
I love the plane. So sorry that no good news for new orders. For IL- 96-300 or IL-96-400.

Pretty cool scene by Ocean Beach today..I watched that Russian cruiser tool into the Bay under escort by a tiny little Coast Guard boat. Gotta love those long, wide and flaring bows the Russians have on their naval gunboats. Not sure where it's docked but that would certainly be worth a visit downtown. I bet the babushkas from out in the Richmond are showing the lads a good time while they're here.

Some tidbit:

"Medvedev, who plans to build a Russian “Silicon Valley,” goes to California tomorrow to meet with technology leaders as Cisco Systems Inc. pledges to “dramatically” increase investment in Russia. He goes to Washington for talks with Obama on June 24. The presidents will also meet with business leaders, including Boeing Co. Chief Executive Officer Jim McNerney. "

What time did it come in? The Chronicle was saying it would be here around 1 PM so I was out there from 11:30 onward and no dice. Heard someone say later that it came in at 11 AM?

I would say the C-17, it's the non Russian built one that looks like the IL-76 the most. But yes, the C-17 is flown only in the Air Force, not in the civilian world.

I absolutely agree. I have a tiny model of an Aeroflot IL-96, which I bought at Brussels airport for only 8 Euros, I bought it for the reason you mention and also because it is an aircraft I never get to see. You won't see those a lot unless you go to Moscow.

SU never flew the A340, neither did Cubana, nor did Kras Air, and no A340 operator has ever flown the IL-86/96, so as long as you know this you can easily recognize one from the other even if your eye is not trained.

Quoting pylon101 (Reply 17):
I love the plane.

So do I, although I have never flown on it and I don't think I ever will.

It probably was around 11 AM. I know I made it back in time for the Brazil-Drogba match. Here's some info from SF Gate:

http://articles.sfgate.com/2010-06-1...-russian-far-east-california-ports

It's a guided missile cruiser. Those must be the launcher tubes I saw along the front half of three ship yesterday, 3 per side if I recall. Not sure if the Japanese are here as well but like they say in the article, it would make the largest gathering of foreign warships in the Bay in many years, surely enough to take over SF if they chose to. Hehe, that would make for some interesting commentary on Fox News..."Japs and Russians invade San Francisco, poll shows most Americans don't care!"
