With regard to the founding of Thai Airways International in 1959 in partnership with SAS (30% ownership plus managerial and technical support)...

...It seems I vaguely recall reading some time ago that, in founding TG, SK had as the leading item on their agenda gaining access to Hong Kong which had long been denied to SK for whatever reason(s).

Since SK could not themselves serve HKG, they devised a plan to serve HKG "through the back door" by way of forming then-new TG to whom they could hand off pax bound for HKG and other Asian destinations...kinda' like a forerunner to alliances/codeshares.

Is my memory serving me correctly? Also, why was SK denied authority to serve HKG themselves during the 1950s-60s?

I think the authorities considered that the Scandinavia-HKG O&D market was too small to justify direct service, and SAS would divert UK-HKG traffic from BOAC's services (keeping in mind that HKG was a British colony then). The same applied for KLM which wasn't able to obtain traffic rights to HKG until sometime in the late 1980s if memory correct.

I think SAS finally obtained HKG rights in 1991 but they suspended service before the end of the 1990s. That's probably a good indication that it wasn't a profitable route. CX also doesn't serve any points in Scandinavia.
