The airlines says they airline may have to wait until next year to find out if Airbus can meet Vietnam's desired operating specifications, but "if they can commit earlier we can conclude [the deal] earlier".

That 380 looks just beautiful!
On what kind of routes would they use it?!

That's a whole lot of paint. I'm also curious, what routes will they use the airplane on? Vietnam Ailrines is expanding so much these days.

The article mentions that BA are the first airline to get the heavier version with more range in 2013. Is this due to the fact that they deferred their order, or did they defer their order so that their A380's would have more range?

The article mentions USA flights. I would also guess SYD and Japan?

Not good news for UA if the deal goes through.

Does the HGW variant(4 ton) add any weight to the aircraft? I would think not.

VN sure seems fixated on range - first the 787 and now the A380. Are they planning a good bit of C-Market / ULR ops?

Simply amazing! Just a few years ago Vietnam and VN were virtual economic basket cases and now they have 787s on order and want a 380. My how times have changed.

CDG/France? Isn't the Paris route big for them? Big enough for an A380?

CDG should be the first A380 route for VN.
Expect in a few years , USA , especially LAX , when trafic will have growth.
Deliveries should not beginn before 2014.Time enough for VN to build an American network.
Don't forget VN will become an Asian dragon.

The following numbers I took from great circle mapper:

SGN - LAX 13,146 km
SGN - SFO 12,614 km
SGN - JFK 14,307 km
SGN - CDG 10,116 km

Except for a direct JFK flight I do not seem problems with the range.

My thoughts exactly!

They've been talking about US routes for years - right back to the time they first got their 777s, which is quite a few years ago now - and still nothing. I don't think it's a bilateral issue, because access was sorted out and a bilateral signed when Bill Clinton visited Vietnam on a state visit. Surely, SGN-LAX/SFO would work for them.

Is there any chance of a direct route to the UK?

The current A380 range is 15,200 km. I would expect the range of A380 to be around 15,600-15,800 km by the time of likely VN delivery--which would make SGN-JFK non-stop possible.

Another possibility is to offer SGN-CDG-JFK, which adds about 10% more distance over the non-stop.
