I think its a great move on EK's part....test to see if DEL T3 is actually A380 ready, there is no test better than a real life test. the aerobridges will be put to test, ground staff, groundhandling, catering, etc. etc.
This might help LH decide if they can send their A380 to DEL in the future even though the Indian government doesn't want them to.

Quoting ojas (Reply 5): It is just a matter of time that LH will announce it's scheduled A380 to DEL from FRA
I read those bilateral talks fell apart (current bilateral limits the aircraft to a '747 or smaller' per media reports that I've read. Did I miss a breakthrough in those talks?
Also, how close to is EK/FlyDubai to the weekly passenger cap on the Dubai/India bilateral? I suspect not many flights could be up-gauged due to the bilateral limits (I believe it was you Ojas who 'clued me in' that there was a cap... oops... I didn't believe it at first.)
I'm excited about the DEL expansion India will have the proper facilities for a hub.

No you didn't miss them, but I'm sure in the meantime tireless negotiations (i.e even more bribes) must have taken place and eventually LH will get what it wants.

No idea, but we all know eventually Flydubai will get more access to India; I just wish it is delayed as much as possible.

The flight is being done to celebrate the first 'official' day of international operations of the New Terminial 3 at DEL. The new terminal has three A380 gates (two-tier gates with three bridges) and EK will be the first airline to operate the A380 to this terminal. However, according to media reports LH wants to start A380 opns on a regular basis from India by the winter on the perennially overbooked DEL-FRA service, but is facing opposition from AI.
