Hi. I went to www.aom.com today only to discover that they had been bought out by Air Liberte. I think the website said it has been that way since December, 2000. Is it my mistake or are they both (along with Air Littoral and Sabena) owned by Swissair? If so, what is the point of making them all one carrier? How can they merge? Was that an attempt to make things better by Swissair or is there something I don't know? Also, was Air Littoral absorbed into this whirpool of French Airlines owned by Swissair?

In this, are they dropping any routes (ie to the Carribean, Zurich, Colombo/Sydney/Noumea etc.)

Merci for the info, I was just curious and interested.

Doesn't anyone here know anything about this? Come on, I know there are people who live in France and Switzerland who must know at least a little bit about this topic.

Thank you  Smile

Well....
Where shall I start...
Swissair bought Air Littoral a few years ago than invested into AOM and ended up the "winner" in the race to buy Air Liberté !
The plan was to amalgamate the 3 carrier and become AF's true competitor and bite a little bit into the french domestic market... the biggest in Europe.
Many airlines have tried to do so and none really managed to do. Swissair tried to have a go at it...
The plan was to merge AOM, Air Liberté into the long haul and domestic routes and Air littoral for the regional ones. Swissair had a planned a single name for the 3 carriers which ended up to be ..... Air Liberté ! A good name after all !
A few months and desmises and executives quitting, the Air Liberté Swissair planned for is a total failure and Air Littoral has been "sentenced to death" by the swiss group. No more cash is to be given to the french regional subsidiary and Air Liberté/AOM were given their last cash advance, 500 millions FFR. Thenew management team "flying" IJ/IW have decided to end a few routes... actually a lot of routes and concentrate on the most profitable. They have retired from the race with Air France and the TGV high speed train. They are now seeking Air France's help to survive and are demanding from the french government interventions with the swiss shareholders and the french national carrier.
The only long-haul routes left are the LAX, PPT, FDF, PTP and RUN routes. They are dropping most of their domestic routes and will open ones where neither Air France nor the TGV goes head to head.

Hope this helps...

Happy Flying,

AF Cabin Crew.

Johnnybgoode...

It is commonly known that the french domestic market is the biggest one in Europe.
Germany's, the UK's and Italy's are coming further down the list.
Just for an example, Paris-Nice, Paris-Marseilles and Paris-Toulouse are routes which carry at AF only 3 million passengers yearly.
I am extremely sorry to disappoint you but it is a fact known by anyone interested in aviation in Europe...

Happy Flying,

AF Cabin Crew.

some people would consider this an offence...

well, if it is commonly known to so many aviation enthusiasts why do i don´t know it?????
i´m certainly not calling myself omniscient but i´ve never heard of France being the biggest domestic market in europe, though i certainly could be wrong.
in addition, France has a far more sophisticated rail network and vaster network of highspeed trains, and additionally, germany has about 25 mio inhabitants more than france which are two facts which could possibly indicate that germany should have more domestic pax.

perhaps you may disregard but i´m certainly not disappointed. contrary to so many others on this board, i´m not angry if any other country has more traffic than the one i´m living and i´m not angry if some other airline has more seat pitch than the airline i prefer (i´m explicitly not saying favorite airline).

unfortunately, i was not able to find figures for the french domestic market. i´ve been checking the IATA and ICAO, AEA and whateve sites, aéroports de france, but i haven´t found any published figures. if you got any numbers, please pass them on, i´d certainly be willing to change my mind. however, i got figures about the german domestic market. according to http://www.adv-net.de/statist/lvs2000.pdf in 2000 germany had 43.116.599 domestic pax.
given the fact that paris-NCE, -MRS, -TLS account for 9 mio pax...

best wishes
daniel
