Delta was VERY aggressive in retiring the NWA brand, especially by painting planes! Rumour is that AMEX pressure was one factor.

Tell us more about this AMEX thing?
I cannot see Chase ever telling United how quickly to paint our aircraft! I know some of the people at MP and I think they would tell them where to go!!! Seems kind of odd to me?

I think ( i could be wrong) AMEX was a big help while they were either in bankruptcy and helped with funding for the merger, so maybe they "suggested" DL rebrand quickly

Yeah that makes sense, if they provided with direct major financing they could tell DL to do whatever they wanted I guess.

Sorry if this has been discussed... but what is AMEX? At first I thought it was American Express hehe

Really an example that shows how fast a nice livery is replaced by a livery that is already outdated.

The Delta colours simply look like low-cost.

Northwest colours were very classic.

Without any kind of bias, just sad to see the scene becoming homogenized... Delta and Northwest, United and Continental... I loved seeing the different tails in US airports!

First in 2004 with 600 Million:

And then in late 2008/early 2009 with 2 billion...yes BILLION with a "B"

Now why would Amex want the NWAbrand deader than BP's reputation?

Well because NWA had a good relationship with US Bank who provided the NWA credit card...

Amex had a huge interest in DELTA and the various Delta SkyMiles cards...SO...

When the merger went through they made it VERY clear that they wanted NWA's brand gone and that there would NOT be two Delta credit cards and the NWA credit card agreement with US Bank terminated FAST.

(When US and HP merged they offered two credit cards...the US card and the HP card became another US card).

Many Delta fliers had hoped that US Bank would continue to offer a Delta card as it would have been either VISA or Mastercard which are more widely accepted in the US than AMEX by a HUGE margin...

Alas it was not to be...and US Bank instead started offering a "FlexPerks" credit card and the mailings that both US Bank and AMEX sent to Delta frequent fliers were non-stop and HILARIOUS, like two old ladies bickering with one of them being especially mean and bitter (Amex!)
