US Reports 2Q Profit - $279M

Excluding special items, the net profit was $265M which is the second highest quarterly profit ever for US. $18M was accrued towards profit sharing during the period. Congratulations to all the employees of US!

Hopefully this trend continues- its been a long time since we have seen a profit like this. We also have more cash and short term investments than we have had since 2008, which is a good sign considering cash is king in this economy. Good job to everyone here on the front line who made this work.

I'll congratulate them when they make an annual net profit for 2010, while keeping their service trends up. US has lost way too much money in its life to be congratulated overall... And this of course goes for UA and DL just as much. But, at least they havent lost a fortune every single quarter. JMO.

Flighty, in the quarters that UA and DL performed poorly so did US. In fact, if you look over the past 5 or 6 years I doubt you could find a quarter where US hadn't beat wall street expectations (even if they were posting a loss). I also don't think you will find a quarter where US lost tons of money while the other legacies were making money.

Since US lost $45M in the first quarter and made $279 this quarter that would be around $234M in the black.

That's my expectation also, in order to provide some key relief and additional investment in the future and in capital goods (i.e. new aircraft). The Q2 was one of a few that have the fuel prices more/less flat.

New York + Rio de Janeiro = One of the best combinations !

Great results, hope this is a sign of a turnaround in airline industry.

They are also recalling a total 300 furloughed pilots/ flight attendants to better support the network and possible expansion.

The LCC revolution has caused legacies to be whipped into shape, but of course the legacy market share is smaller now. And after mergers, US stands at #4 or so. So they play a role as price spoiler in quite a few markets. That could be their name, Price Spoiler Airlines. Because that is their game.

According to Kirby today, the LGA operation (excluding hub flying and the shuttle) was profitable this quarter. So that is a pretty good turnaround.
