Was checking the KSAT activity this AM, and noticed FDX 628 listed as SAT to MSY (not MEM). According to Flight Aware, the flight was diverted from MEM to MSY, when it was just northeast of IAH. I assume it was an operational diversion, not an emergency diversion, since it was much closer to IAH than MSY. Can someone from FedEx enlighten on this?

It was probably an extra lift diversion. FedEx often flies routes that allow them to divert to another nearby airport if that station has some extra packages that need to be shipped and won't fit on the flight that station currently gets.
For example, I don't know if they still have this flight, but a DEN to MEM often flew south out of DEN over ABQ, and flew east over Texas/Oklahoma and then back to the hub. This flight could then divert if any of the stations nearby needed extra lift.
