Lebanon to expand Beirut capacity and open new airport for LCC and cargo flights
Posted on 28 July 2010 in Airports

Beirut Airport is to more than double previous expansion plans with work due to begin early next year in order to meet growing demands. A second international airport is also to be opened in the north of Lebanon.

In an interview with Lebanon’s director general of Civil Aviation, Dr Hamdi Chaouk, it was confirmed that Beirut is to increase its capacity from six million passengers a year to 18 million with the construction of a new terminal and 23 new gates – taking the total to 46.

Dr Chaouk said that up to seven of these gates would be designed to take the Airbus A380.

Lebanon is also to build a second major airport at Kleyate. The existing Rene Mouawad airport is primarily utilised by the military but only part of its 3,000m runway is usable following previous Israeli attacks.

BEY handled 5 million passengers last year. The existing 23-gate terminal has a design capacity of 6 million which the airport is expected to reach this year.

Great news for Lebanon. The option for a 2nd civil airport in the country will help create new opportunities in the country.

The fact that so much expansion is going on shows great confidence in the country also.

Where are they going to build the new terminal?
I can't see any free space in the pictures above.

Do they plan on attracting more European LCC's?

I would suspect European and Gulf carriers will be the main target LCC market. They are the only ones, along with Nth African destinations, that suit the business model, including distance requirements.

A Lebanese LCC has been talked about for a while in partnership with another existing international carrier, yet it is yet to take off. Maybe this will be the driving force behind thsi development.

It sounds a bit overoptimistic. The airport is dead empty many hours of the day. Except for periods of time where most flights arrive and departs at the same time. There were many talks to use the military runway/airport in the North (Rene Moawad airport) but it never materialized as there where never a real need for it, since Lebanon is so small without much traffic.

CF105Arrow, I tend to agree with you.
As much as BEY is finally getting its much deserved growth and increased tourist arrivals, the airport is indeed dead most times of the day. Even at its peak, are all the gates ever used up (i think the peak is usually between midnight and 5am?)

Gates issue aside, I think they could do with an expanded check in area, as well as stream lining the arrivals bit after baggage collection where there is a mad rush to get past the one customs check point.

Also, a PROPER clearly labelled airport taxi service would be very welcome, but probably wishful thinking.

With all my due respect, both of you are dead wrong here....with 20% growth in 2010 and more gorwth for years to come, at some point the "dead" airport you are referring to will eventually need a major expansion - which is not going to happen over night!!!

what's wrong with planning!!!

In fact, flying out of BEY in the morning rush (7-10AM), the immigration/passport control lineups are insane - I suppose they could modify the immigration hall and install additional booths for faster processing, but I don't think it would relieve the carziness anyways. I have been to many airports that seem dead at some point during the day. Remember if airlines want to fly to BEY in the wee hours of the day and BEY doesn't have the gates, they will not serve the airport,....soI don't thtink it's a bad idea to plan for the next 30 years

If the bottleneck in the terminal is indeed in the immigration area, then yes, modifying the hall to accommodate more immigration officers (and ensuring that all booths are open) would be a far more cost-effective solution than a second terminal. In fact, given that the description of the plan (expanding from 23 to 46 gates) sounds like an identical second terminal would be built, it would be imperative to ensure that the immigration bottleneck be resolved in the design of the new terminal.
