Alaska Announces San Jose, CA- Cabo

Hopefully AS will be able to market this new service and utilize their strong brand in CA to fully support this service. F9 tried this route along coupled with SMF-SJD service a few years back with the 319 and pulled out after just a few months.

Always great to see additional SJC service with AS. Admittedly I got really excited and then a smidge of disappointment after initially misreading the title as "San Jose, CR (Costa Rica)" -- I would love to see SJO on the AS network.

But still, SJC-SJD is neat.

That's great news!!! Alaska seems to be putting more and more focus on SJC. SJC could really use the business with the new Terminal B opening.

Well to be fair, the network is only about 60% of what 2-3 years ago. AS has shrunk Mexico flying alot.

Great to see more service for SJC -- international at that! -- and additional Mexico routes for AS as well.

With the developing turmoil at MX these days, perhaps additional opportunities for AS (and others) may open up. (IF Mexico remains a viable market and regains some of its former popularity...) VX is now getting involved as well.

It will be interesting for me to follow the governmental approvals timeline for this route and how quickly these new flights are opened up for sale by AS. Having just gone through the process with SAN-PVR -- about 2 1/2 months from application and original route-announcement to first sale of tickets -- it seemed to be a very drawn-out procedure!

Alaska seems to be doing quite well on Bay Area-Mexico. I just arranged travel for a group and blocked 65 seats on a SFO-SJD for January. There are so many options to choose from!

We used to run the E70 on the route for F9 and on average we took 6-10 people on it on the times I worked it. It would not surprise if AS ended up pulling it as well.

Except F9 didn't have anywhere near the market share on either end that AS does. Don't be so quick to assume AS will experience the same anemic loads F9 did.

Let's not forget, this is actually restarting the service. SJC had both SJD/PVR before. But this will continue the build-up of what I see is a small hub forming in San Jose.

Yes...AS is no longer only known for its flights to the PNW. It appears that AS is turning into an airline of opportunity, moreso than a reactionary airline.

But if AS wants to continue to grow, then they need to obtain airplanes to grow resources than replace resources. I supposed if AS saw a golden opportunity to significantly grow its product, they could look to leasing more airplanes.

Will this flight allow connections from other cities like BOI, GEG or even SMF?

Looks like it will connect from BOI. But GEG and SMF won't. This could be good though because at least GEG is close enough to SEA to make connecting on AS not too far out of the way. I can't imagine flying BOI-SEA and then on to SJD through somewhere.

I don't think this is lost on anyone at AS. However, this flight is 3x weekly. Hardly enough to warrant more planes just yet. I still think we will see a lot of capacity shift where it makes sense before deciding to start expanding at a quicker pace. Seems like we are more focused on making all the routes money makers through schedule adjustments before bringing extra airframes into the mix.

No...I wasn't specifically targeting the SJC-SJD announcement...but more of the bigger picture. I think AS very poised to do some modest expansion. I just hope AS doesn't find itself saying "Hey! Why don't we increase frequency on the SEA-PHX flights" or "Hey! Why don't we start SEA-PHL". Then the answer could be "We don't have the airplanes." Or, QX is getting rid of another 3 CRJ-700's. Would AS jump in and fill the void?

Could it be that if and when all of the CRJ-700's are gone...is that the end of LGB, FAT and SBA?

LAX-SJO? I second that! You can't tell me the 73H's doesn't have the range! But don't make it an early morning departure out of LAX or midnight arrival back to LAX. That sucks for connections.

SEA-PHX has been reduced substantially over the past few years, so adding some frequency back in actually wouldn't be a bad thing, provided the demand is there (and it is).
