checked out the Ohare website and realized how underwhelming it really is. For one of the world's busiest and major airports it certainly is lackluster. Does anyone agree? I think DFW has a splashy website, and ATL's is pretty good as they just re-did their's.

I, too, find it kind of lousy. They need to divide it moreso for both MDW and ORD. It seems to look same as it did first time I looked at it years ago.
Perhaps I (we all) just expect more from a large city airporrt site!!
With websites probably the first thing people go to for info and just to look around, I would think they would have a lot more emphesis on quality and appearance as well as accurate info. Maybe when they sell some alderman seats lol.

Chicago's airport websites are long overdue for an upgrade. Instead of getting the detailed food location information I'd like to have for my connection through ORD, I get to see Mayor Daley's name on seemingly every page. Just what I want to read.

Definately! They just did it up a few years back but to be honest it was no real improvement to what it was. ORD doesn't even have a logo like other airports do.

Not sure if you know or not but we don't have any money left in this city to do anything. $600 million short on next year's budget. I'd rather them fix the streets here before they redo the site.

There are ways around that though. Not to go all non-aviation, but for some small criminal, instead of locking them up for a few months, or just having them pick up garbage, if they have some sort of web design background, have them work on creating a better website for ORD for a few months as their sentence. Would be a good way to have the job done relatively cheap and have something that looks like it was designed within the past 10 years.

Sadly, ORD's website looked better 5 years ago before the current redesign than it does now. The current one looks like it was done in FrontPage 2000 back in the day when everyone used Internet Explorer 6 as their browser. While on the topic of IE6, the ORD/MDW website doesn't render properly in Internet Explorer 8, Firefox, Chrome, or Safari, probably because it was built for IE6 and its proprietary coding characteristics (loved by some, hated by others).
Yet it could have been worse: one should have seen FWA's old website - a mishmash of information with a mix of over-rendered and middle-school graphics. FWA's current one is very good for a small airport, though.

That's not common for airport websites, but quite common in Illinois, where it's not uncommon to plaster the mayor/governor's name on everything. For example, the State of Illinois once had "Rod R. Blagojevich, Governor" signs on the Illinois Tollway toll plazas and "Welcome to Illinois" signs. Those have since been replaced by "From the People of Illinois".

I agree with you as well the website needs to be updated. I work for the city in the Department of Aviation. I will see who I can talk to about this. But the Daley Crap rules so probably wont get too far

On a similar topic, has anyone noticed a discrepancy in the quality of airport maps? Some, for example ATL, DFW, IAH, MIA, have great maps, while others, LHR, LAX and ORD aren't so great or nonexistent.

As some have mentioned, the old version of the ORD website used to be much better. Not quite an interactive one like MKE, but the terminal maps showing all the amenities with details was pretty cool. The new verision with all the food and everything else in a list instead of on the maps is pretty ho-hum.

totally agree with you on thta. Dont know why they got rid of the maps that showed the locations of the food outlets and stores.

The website is atrocious. You click between the Midway and O'Hare sections and then all the same stuff like maps etc. still end up jumbled up together on one screen, as if they forgot they had 2 airports.

How much do you think a website acutally costs to change? A web designer they hire off the street and pay 100 bucks (and that's being generous) could have a better one done in a day. That's nothing in the grand scheme of all the cash the city wastes on a regular basis.

You all can save your breath. I emailed them about their shameless website. Here is their response:
"Thank you for using flychicago.com and bringing your suggestions
to our attention.
Under our current homepage design, if you go to the top Nav Bar, you
will find a tab that takes you directly to our maps, with an option to
download and print out. We also have a tab to flight information on the
same, top nav bar. We also give our customers the option of links going
directly to the airline website - many of our customers prefer that
option, when you click on the flight information tab.
One of our goals for this year is to redesign flychicago.com and
transform it from a largely informational site, to one that has
world-class design and interactivity. We will also retain our ability
to have a website which is accessible for persons with disabilities.
We hope you will continue to use our website when you travel and
appreciate your taking the time to contact us."

One of my biggest gripes is that there is no free wifi. I know of plenty of smaller airports that offer this. You can't tell they can't find some company willing to sponsor it. There are ton of tiny airports that have a better website than ORD. To me it's a disgrace. But then again this is Chicago. To pay for a new website, Bugsy would need to sell some assets. Oh, wait they are mostly taken.
