It's being reported that Monarch flight ZB932 from BHX to TFS had to return to BHX last night after suffering an apparent engine fire

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-10860160

It is also being reported that eyewitnesses on the ground saw "plumes of black smoke" coming from the aircraft. Although reports suggest that once the aircraft was back on the ground no signs of fire were found.

I suspect this is going to be an A321 - Does anyone have the reg of the aircraft involved or any further information?

MON932 was G-MARA, an A321.

Could have been a birdstrike?

Always good that no-one was hurt! How will this leave the MON operation over the week if they are a A321 down? Im sure their aircraft are fully utilised at this time of year?

Thanks for the info, I flew on MARA last year coming back from ALC   No further info yet to what actually caused this but I'll keep an eye on the PPRUNE thread and also a few of the local BHX forums to see if anything else surfaces.

No doubt the passengers were screaming in terror and praying as the aircraft plunged towards the ground

If Discovery Channel make a documentary about it then there will be findings that "send shockwaves thoughout the industry".

Glad to hear this seems to have turned out all OK although I'm sure it would have been unnerving for all aboard.

Please don't get me started on these air crash investigations! they make me cringe! So much! First of all if the Narrator isn't enough to get you going, then the pilots wearing Propeller thick Headsets in an airliner would...

My favourite two quotes come from the Birmingham Mail

"the pilot of the Monarch flight, which had just left Birmingham Airport bound for Tenerife, came over the intercom saying an engine was on fire and warned them to brace themselves for a crash landing."

and

It was frightening because everyone knew what was coming and we would have to crash land.

Of course the pilot said they were going to have to perform a crash landing    The media combined with what the public have to say really gets me some times.

Haha, indeed, typical. I read the story just a few hours ago in my local newspaper, the Express and Star, and while in typical fashion everyone was 'screaming, panicking and crying,' at least they mentioned the pilot sounded calm and expained to the pax that it was fine to land on one engine. A little closer to the truth than the Birmingham Mail version of events...

Glad everything turned out ok though, although reading these articles does make me laugh a little with some of the words used.
