This is just pure speculation from my side.

This week a few JAL employees from "flight operations" were staying at a hotel here in AUH. This was for almost a week, and AFAIK, there are no JAL flights from AUH, only from DXB.

Is JAL planning of opening AUH?
What type of aircraft could they use?

only from DXB.

JAL do not fly to DXB. JL 5096 is a codeshare flight by Emirates

They were probably there for some training stint with Etihad...nothing more nothing else.

JAL would any day fly NRT DXB nonstop instead of NRT AUH !!!

Unlikely to be anything to do with EY commerically, either, since EY have a codeshare agreement with NH.

That's what i thought first as well. But, the business cards indicate only 1 pilot (B747) and the rest are only mention as flight operator.

I see a lot of EY staff coming for training from all over the world. But it's the 1st time crew from a different airline comes here.

It could be that the B744 pilot is trying to move to a different company (some airline in the Middle East?) JAL is firing over 16,000 staff and with their B744 fleet going in a little over two months, it could well be that the pilot is trying to move to a different airline.

JAL is currently in no situation to start new routes. In fact, I'd rather be surprised if they keep all of their longhaul: CDG, FRA, LHR, and SVO?

With JAL's situation, it might be a very good chance for rapidly growing middle eastern airlines to hire Japanese pilots.

JAL has a lot of B747-400 charter operation going as we speak all over Europe and also few in the Middle East. There might be an upcoming JAL flight (charter) to your region. JAL and operations people go always in advance to look around the airport, it's facilities, checking operational requirements etc., since these airports are unknown for the airline.

There is not such a route in the planning to become a scheduled flight anytime soon.

btw, I think it's very professional from you to make such posts after getting/seeing a business card and post it on an public forum, since it feeds rumours or can even hurt business. Since you seems to be in the hotel business yourself (is this your hotel??) then you should know better.

JAL really is not in a position to start anything new at the moment.

Let them reorganise first, then you may see some decent expansion.

You are joking right??? This is a discussion forum and it was a very valid question! There is nothing wrong with a little harmless speculation.

No I'm not. It's very unprofessional of a Hotel Employee to share such information (who/position and where they're staying), and then even start a rumour. btw, the rumour/discussion if JL starts AUH is alright.

Who told you I am a hotel employee? I don't work in a hotel anymore. Neither it was in the company I work for. So I don't see why it is unprofessional.

JAL do not fly charters to anywhere in middle east, they were however looking at doing charter to Cairo this year.
