Summary of weekday airline departures from Newark and Chicago Midway as shown in the May 1939 Official Aviation Guide (you remember LGA wasn't then open, so EWR was it for the New York area):

Six airlines at Newark:

American 12 flights east, 15 west (including three destined Glendale, eventually)
TWA 11 flights west (including three destined Burbank)
United 10 flights west
Eastern 15 flights west (including three destined Miami, two to San Antonio, one to Brownsville)
Canadian Colonial 3 flights destined Montreal
Airline Feeder System-- one flight, Wed only, destined Barnes Field, Springfield MA, on a
"Tri-motored Stinson "A." Two Pilots. Complete radio."

Chicago has eight airlines:

American 13 flights east and 2 destined Fort Worth
TWA 7 flights east, 3 west
United 9 flights east, 6 west
Eastern 2 flights destined Miami
Northwest 5 flights west (incl three destined Seattle)
Braniff 2 flights, incl one destined Brownsville
Chicago and Southern 3 flights to New Orleans
Pennsylvania Central 2 flights to Grand Rapids

EWR may have had some paved runway by then-- not sure. The whole field must have just about fit into a one-kilometer square on the south side of that east-west stretch of the highway. Center it on the north end of today's Runway 22R; make it cover a kilometer west from the CNJ railroad and something less than a kilometer perpendicular to that.
