Why Aren't Airline Websites Free Onboard?

I recently was on a DL flight and I needed to make some new reservations, I was a bit surprised that Delta.com wasn't free. I had to pay $12.95 or $11.95 for wifi to go to the website. Youl'd think they'd give free access to their own sites?
Why not?

Some people don't get it. Business is about making MONEY!

I don't know about Delta, but AA gives you free on board access to aa.com.

That is very strange. I know US also gives free access to usairways.com

You should write Delta letter about it.

Why not?

Weird, I was on a DL flight back in April, and I WAS able to access delta.com free, and was able to track my flight. Now other sites, I would have had to pay.

you just have to connect to gogo on Delta for free delta.com access. I read up on their blog, checked my flight stats, etc on my flight last week for free

That's not the case at all. On top of the single flight options (based on length and device), Gogo does offer a 24 hour pass for a single airline, as well as other options for multiple flights. The F/A may not have been fully versed on the other options, as the F/As on the DL flights I have been on in recent months only mentioned the single flight rate in their announcement.

delta.com is free on board. I've used it several times and never had to pay. There is a link to it on the gogo launch page.

Thanks I know better now. DL should have a better way of educating dumb old pax that became DM and got a I-Pad last week..

Never used the GoGo before this week, for that matter I never used an I-Pad either.

iPad's are awful with networks, I work at the IT department here at the University and there are so many problems with iPads and their networking (or should I say lack of networking) people have problems with them everywhere they go with things.

IIRC most "travel" sites are free onboard, back before NW and DL fully merged I was able to access nwa.com and other airline websites for free on my DL CVG-MCO flight.

Funny you should mention iPad networking problems. I used to have them. Have they tried upgrading to iOS 3.2.1 or 3.2.2 from the 3.2 that comes in the box? That solves 99% of the Wi-Fi networking problems.

Would have preferred Lonely Planet, but Frommer's, my second choice, will do fine too.

All the carriers that use GOGO inflight there websites are free and you can use them for free on other carriers with gogo. Ive used Airtran on Delta and Delta on Airtran for free.
