Apparently a BMI 757 has made an emergency landing in Mauritania after its engine caught fire. Anybody know anymore?

Only thing I can find is this

http://english.cri.cn/6966/2010/08/25/45s591007.htm

A British passenger plane of Boeing 757 owned by BMI company was on Wednesday forced to land at the Nouakchott international airport, security sources told Xinhua.

The pilot noticed that one of the plane's engines had caught fire and immediately contacted the airport's control tower to allow him to land in the Mauritanian capital within few minutes.

The plane which was coming from Freetown and destined to London was carrying 108 passengers most of whom were Africans.

No human life was lost in the incident and the fire was put off by the airport's fire fighters.

Edit

And it seems it was G-STRY which flew the outbound as BMI967 yesterday from LHR.

This just cracked me up - so he (she) just noticed it, huh? Glad it was a non-event - but apparently it was still burning when landed? If that is true - bad situation.

Reminds of a joke....

-Pilot says... sorry to inform you we've lost engine #4 due to a fire... burning rather nicely out there....

An Astraeus Boeing 757-200 on behalf of BMI, registration G-STRY performing flight 5W-968/BD-968 from Freetown (Sierra Leone) to London Heathrow,EN (UK) with 110 people on board, was enroute near Nouakchott (Mauritania) when the crew needed to shut an engine (RB211) down following a couple of engine surges. The airplane diverted to Nouakchott for a safe landing at 02:30L (02:30Z).

A replacement Airbus A321 registration G-MEDL has been dispatched to Nouakchott.

Hello

I hope the passengers have been kept well informed of what’s going on, often this can be one of the worst faults of an airline when something goes wrong – delays/things going wrong with no explanation.

I guess this incident shows that as long as the crew are well trained then a problem which could have turned into a major incident remains only an inconvenience.

Welcome to the pilots of the B752.

Kimberly

Ps. I hope BMi put the pax up in a nice hotel and not just left them at the airport for hours.

I take it you don't know a whole lot about Mauritania.

Luckily they were all African passengers so I guess it's immaterial where they had to put down. It all looks the same. Be the same for us Europeans having to land in Europe somewhere.

I take it BMI are chartering aircraft off Astreus?

Personally, I would disagree - Africa is an extremely vast and contrasting continent!

So... you're saying that you'd feel relatively 'at home' if your plane diverted to Moldova or Albania (for example) ?
