At that time of year there is no doubt much stronger demand for 77W capacity on other routes. Makes sense to operate the smallest aircraft that meets the demand and permits adequate frequency which is important on JFK routes with a high proportion of business traffic, especially during the winter.

An airline uses all tools they can to predict how a market will react on a season plus how other markets are performing. Advance bookings, previous season, current sales... all is used. With that, AF probably believe its better to deploy the 77W to places such as Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires during winter, reducing a little JFK capacity to 772's. This would allow extra revenue in some stations while others will be able to get extra revenue.
