DL1634 9/12 Equipment Swap

Yesterday I flew on Delta 1634 from JFK-ATL which was originally scheduled on a 75E (ex-TWA 757-200) as per the seatmap. When I arrived at the gate yesterday, I was very surprised to find N839MH, a 767-400 at the gate. Sure enough, the flight status had been updated to reflect the operating aircraft to the 764. We also used an airstart cart at gate 4 to start engine #2, so I am led to believe that the airplane had some kind of mechanical failure which precluded a TATL crossing, but still allowed for a domestic flight in revenue service. I was just curious if anyone knew the specific reason for the equipment swap and what went bad on that particular ship. It also seems clear to me that DL was swapping 764's with ATL, as when we arrived, there was another 764 (N837MH) a few gates down on the T concourse that was heading up to JFK to arrive in time for the TATL rush. This flight (DL192) was also scheduled for a 757 but got equipment swapped.

Any insight would be appreciated!

Sounds like you are describing a deferred APU. A working APU is usually required for ETOPS, although I am not sure about the 764. So they probably swapped a 764 out of the Atlanta system into JFK.
