Love those South Florida summer thunderstorms. Apparently MIA was having weather issues forcing an American 757, Lufthansa A330 and a Lufthansa 747 to divert to PBI. Those are some big birds in the land of the 737 and A320.

Just an update...the LH 747 took off for MIA at about 4:15pm EST and the LH A330 is still being fueled. The 747 had a medical emergency onboard as well, according to airport officials, and a pax was taken to a local hospital.

PBI gets regular 757 service.

Yes, but not from AA. And while the 757 is not a "big bird" compared to what PBI normally sees, the A330 and the 747 certainly are.

Once upon a time when Eastern and National ruled the South Florida skies PBI got DC-10's, A300 and L-1011 on a regular multiple times a day basis during Florida's season. Delta was also a big L-1011 and 767 airline at PBI, flew on those types many times to Atlanta, New York and Boston. Today sadly 757 are the biggest regular visitor, a 767 when an plane change is made.

Some of those L-1011's , DC-10's and A-300's flew from PBI to both FLL and MIA.

The 763 was even on CVG-PBI back in 2003 if memory serves.

Though its not like PBI has never seen big planes. They used to get widebodies all the time coming in from ATL and the Northeast!

On a somewhat related note, why hasn't PBI seen the massive growth that other South Florida airports like MCO, RSW, and FLL have? WN remains tiny, and neither B6 nor FL have added many p2p flights (to small and mid size markets throughout the Northeast, Midwest, and/or Upper South) like they have to all kinds of other airports in the state. According to wikipedia the only int'l flights go to YYZ (seasonal), YUL (new route, also seasonal), and MHH (seems quite random to me). Isn't there demand to CUN, SJU, or even just FPO and NAS?

Flying in the middle seat of coach is much better than not flying at all!

Those PBI to MIA or MIA to PBI were flights going up north or coming down from up north. They were not MIA-PBI-MIA flights. At the time L-1011 and DC-10 ruled the east coast to Florida, the next plane down in size was a 727-200, the 757 had not arrived yet. Quite a size difference since the widebodies carried double the passengers.

There are a few reasons I know of. First, with FLL and MIA so close, those bigger operations tend to get the growth way before PBI would. Second, the economy has killed South Florida the past few years and West Palm Beach has been hit extremely hard. Third, West Palm Beach is still significantly smaller in population than FLL or MIA. (At least half-million smaller than FLL and at least one million less than MIA). Add to that the fact the FLL is only about 20+ miles from the south end of Palm Beach County....it draws plenty of customers away from PBI often because it provides more options (although not always cheaper ones).

PBI has lost United, Sun Country, Frontier and Northwest counter space in the past 2 years. Right now things are at their slowest as it is off-season. Spirit should return soon as they are seasonal and DirectAir is starting service in November. There is always hope for expansion - and the airport is in the middle of making improvements as part of its master plan, but I think the only Lufthansa 747s will see here in the near future will continue to be MIA diversions.

In recent years FLL has taken some Caribean and Latin traffic from MIA and Spirit also flies to many of those destinations fom FLL. PBI is purely domestic except for a few Bahamas flights, its big draw is the "snowbird" trafic. FLL also draws from the Boca Raton and Delray area in Southern Palm Beach county. North Broward and Southern Palm Beach county residents have two deecnt sized airports to choose from.
