1x/daily starting in May, with a second flight beginning in June.

I'm not really sure how this will work out. While SJU has traditionally been a strong destination for B6, I can't help but wonder if the new flights will cannibalize B6's highly profitable MCO-SJU flights. In addition, TPA-CUN was short lived, and B6 has failed to expand its TPA-JFK/EWR/HPN/BOS schedules as much as it has from its other Floridian markets.

On the flip side, the fairly large Latin community in Tampa could help make this flight a success. I wonder if 2x over the summer will be overkill, but I hope to be proven wrong.

I hope it succeeds, maybe the portent of things to come for B6 out of TPA. They could certainly beef up the TPA schedule a bit now that they're well established at MCO. I don't think MCO-SJU will take much of a hit for B6 as a result of this. Maybe some LAX/LAS/OAK action to feed the SJU route in the future?

AA already serves this route, and with B6 coming in to compete, this will greatly drive down yields on this route, and could eventually lead to AA pulling away from this route. B6, along with FL and NK have already caused AA to give up on MCO-SJU and FLL-SJU.

Perhaps this may be related to their new partnership

Things will get ugly. I don't see how AA, FL, AND B6 will all survive on TPA-SJU!

They won't. Most likely, AA will pull out first, then both B6 and FL will both go back down to 1 x Daily. I don't think the market will support over 2 Daily flights. Certainly not 5 x Daily!

AA has the advantage of having significant brand presence and feed on the SJU end, though. I have a feeling the SJU-originating side of the market is being underestimated here. I would think FL will have a much harder time getting this market than AA or B6, though they do seem to do well on MCO-SJU, their only VFR Caribbean route (so far).

On the TPA side of things, its a real crap shoot. FL serves the most destinations out of there, but probably isn't appealing to Tampans (who probably want to go to New York, LA, Chicago, Boston, D.C., etc.) with most of its services that go to small random places like DAY, ROC, etc. B6 is no powerhouse either, and hasn't developed p2p flying from TPA like it has from other Florida markets. TPA is a mere spoke for AA, but it has served the market faithfully for decades and offers connectivity to important markets around the country and world!

It's hard to say who will throw in the towel first, but don't underestimate AA!

I think AA will be more than glad to pull out of TPA-SJU; perhaps an "under the table" deal with B6. The FL announcement was unexpected.

My guess is that AirTran was 2nd to the party here. There was an article earlier in the week in the TPA paper about how JetBlue was at odds with the airport over an incentive for TPA-AND San Juan - Luis Munoz Marin International (SJU / TJSJ), Puerto Rico">SJU, so FL was tipped they were working on it and probably prepared an announcement which they dropped 10 minutes after B6. It's highly unusual for either carrier to announce a route that doesn't involve a hub with more than 1 RT. This is a classic p---ing match and will be a financial disaster.

Perhaps this had been on FL's radar for quite a while but with B6's announcement, they felt the best thing to do would be to go ahead and run it sooner rather than later.

AA's daily SJU-TPA flight might have its days numbered!!!   AA consistently full daily 757 might go away; AA also abandoned MCO-SJU (4 daily flights A300s) over 18mos. ago due to the "low cost carriers attack"; B6, FL and NK saturated the MCO-SJU market and lowered fares; AA could not make it. I'm sure AA would rather use the TPA-SJU 757 for another market with higher yields considering how stretched AA is with equipment, that 757 could be well used somewhere else. I think AA will further reduce its SJU operation by keeping service to its hubs/focus cities only ORD, DFW, MIA, JFK, BOS and eliminating all other routes that are being absorbed by LCC's. SJU is definitely a low cost market at the present...AA needs to concentrate on markets with higher yields. Unless AA works something out with its APA pilots and they allow AE CRJ's to fly some Caribbean markets where AA is no longer profitable; AE CRJ's, could easily serve SJU-MCO, SJU-FLL, SJU-TPA, SJU-SDQ, SJU-AUA, SJU-CCS, and even operate from BQN and PSE seasonally. Even MIA-Upstate NY/NE markets (BUF/SYR/PVD) What a shame!!!
