South African was never in SkyTeam. They just had a codeshare agreement with Delta. Continental left SkyTeam because of the DL/NW merger and NW selling their "golden share" in CO back to CO, which allowed them to chart their own course. CO's entry into SkyTeam was in some respects a shotgun wedding, as the alliance between them, NW and KLM (Wings Alliance) joined SkyTeam (Former Wings member Alitalia had previously joined SkyTeam a few years earlier.) and part of this was due to KLM being bought out by Air France.
