Allegiant announced it has signed a 3 year contract to operate charters to Wendover for Peppermill Casinos. This will be similiar to its contracts with Harrahs.
http://www.allegiantair.com/aaNews/aaNews20100921d.pdf

As part of the contract, Allegiant will base one aircraft at Wendover and establish a base of 20 employees including crews and maintenance. The base will open by March 2011.

Peppermill Casinos operates the Montego Bay Casino Resort, Rainbow & Hotel Casino and Peppermill Hotel & Casino all in Wendover.

This replaces the Xtra Airways 737-400's. Is Xtra up for sale now or what? Great news for Wendover, I wonder if they'll keep the same schedule and cities.

I wonder if they'll just shift them to flying for Direct Air then.

Xtra Airways is now based in Boise, ID. They run charters just like the rest. Why would they be for sale? If Direct Air is paying them on time and there is no issues what wrong with doing more flying for them?

I was just wondering. Last time the Peppermill switched airlines was because Casino Express shut down. Wasn't Xtra also leasing planes the supposed new Western Airlines a year or two ago?

Yes, the supplied N42XA

Xtra also supplied planes for SkyValue, a public charter out of GYY.

I hope Direct Air doesn't go the same way...

DirectAir in SLC with a former Western II 737-400 (operated by Xtra Airways). RARE sight indeed.

Does DirectAir still do Myrtle Beach flying?

Casino Junkets - a very nice operation.

A few months ago my Travel Agency was thinking about acquiring some DC-9's or 737's for a similar venture, but, the plans are on hold until we finish moving our office to the Houston area. The junkets can be a huge winfall...or a HUGE loss. It all depends. Peppermill has tried several times with different ways to get people to Wendover, and this formula they have (similar to Allegiant's scheduled ops) seems to be working wonders for them. Whenever I've gone to Wendover the casinos were always packed with out of towners who flew in on Xtra, and coming soon on Allegiant.

Xtra Airways actually began as Casino Express. Original owner sold them off and they became Xtra. Hence Xtra's CXP code and Casino Express call-sign.

Owner of Elko,NV Red Lion Inn (among others) decided to end the junkets to EKO and that was a reason for sell off, IIRC. Also why Xtra was based in Elko.

That is quite interesting. Seems to me that casino-junket operations don't necessarily operate to make money and their operation either just barely brakes even or operates at a loss. Nevertheless the opportunity created by bringing people by air into a small town that would otherwise never be able to attract such guest to spend their money makes it worthwile for the hotels to subsidize the flights. The operation of such service is quite interesting because the hotels are paying the airlines a fixed amount for every flight which guarantees the airline a small but steady profit.

Casino express now Xtra Airways was one of the pioneers of such service in the Nevada region I believe.

Ahh yeah, I remember the ads in Airways magazine and in the Salt lake Tribune saying an airline based in EKO was for sale.

Let us not forget the Hacienda Hotel's pioneering flights back in the 40's as well.

I love it as well, I'm a huge supporter of Allegiant.
