The skies are set to turn black after Air New Zealand revealed its new design for the first aircraft in its new domestic jet fleet.
The new all black design was unveiled in Sydney today by Air New Zealand CEO Rob Fyfe, in "recognition of the airline’s long time support of the nation’s favourite game".
Fyfe said: "In celebration of Air New Zealand’s long running support of rugby in New Zealand, our first new A320 will arrive in January sporting a sleek black livery complete with silver fern motif and Koru on its tail."

Would be nice to have a Silver fern painted on the belly of a 744 and for that to overfly Eden park on the opening ceremony, a bit like QF did at the 2003 RWC

A little off topic - from the stuff.co.nz link posted by NZdsgnr above, there is a YouTube video at the bottom of the article, showing off the aircraft with it's full livery flying around. I'm just wondering how and what did they use to make that video - it seems like the video was taken of Microsoft Flight Simulator!
Anyway, back on topic, yeah I think a special livery A320 would look great indeed!

looking good, but it's missing the star alliance logo by the door will this be on the real aircraft. love the artwork on the tail, should make it standard arccross the fleet. !!

I like it.
I was also left wondering if the silever fern decals and small koru on the tail may reveal the thinking of the once planned now seeminly indefinately shelved plans to roll out a new livery across the fleet.
T fern look great - much more substancial than the old wave decals.

I have to say I am not a fan , I think the tiny little koru shunted off into a corner at the top of the fin looks awful , it would have been better to leave if off altogether than to cram it in there like that .

Is this a hoax? Are NZ really basing advertising on images from MSFS? I am ambivalent about the scheme but just horrified if this is really how they announce it.

Someone please tell me this is not true.
Well if you want to add fuel to the hoax fire the livery was launched in Sydney...

I think it is absolutely brilliant!!! I wish the black was matt finish or with a little bit of a silvery sparkle!! The ferns are just perfect... Wish they placed the air newzealand text and logo in sparkling silver instead of white. Just love it and it is quite tasteful too.....

It certainly makes a statement. Remember back in 1999 (I think) when "The Edge" suggested Air NZ paint a 744 in black to fly the AB's to London for the wrold cup. At that time it was poo poo'ed as a black plane was too dangerous, ie nobody would see it at night etc when taxi-ing . The Edge created a grahpic image of a 744 which looked impressive. I magine if we did have a 744 or 773 landing in LAX looking very imposing in black - certainly a head turner since I dont think there are any planes arounf with black livery
