It cracks me up that LH can't operate the A380 to the giant PEK airport but they can to Mallorca. Granted, this is not a daily scheduled flight but nevertheless, this has to be an embarrassment to the Chinese authorities. But then again, do they care?

Too bad that I will be on a trip to the U.K. on these days

Yep. Either a lot of people were faster than us or seats first were offered LH-internal ?
One user on a.de apparently has been able to grab a available seat (posted at 1531h today).

On LH Facebbook page the sale has been announced already earlier. From what I see about 14:00 Frankfurt time.
Too bad I can't use Facebook at work.
But as long as a.net is not locked....

I got the mail at 14:15. When I looked online every category was still available for both dates.

Will this be the first A380 to a Spanish airport?

A quick search in the photo database reveals that it has been to Spanish airports at least twice:

So I guess this is the end of the rumors spread on planeboys that the LH A380 will come to TXL on October 3rd? Hard to imagine that LH uses two A380s for show-offs on the same day.

They have to fly them somewhere since PEK only allows one flight per week. However, I didn't know PMI was that important for LH. Counter-measure against AB and their FRA-PMI flight, like the 744 on FRA-HAM?

I would of thought JFK would of been another choice for LH.

They managed to sell the economy class on both dates in minutes. I got a call from our LH rep just a few minutes after I received the newsletter and everyhting was gone but business... And they were just on sale on LH website and not even in the GDS!

Air France didn't fillled their A380 nearly that fast, although they were cheaper and it was possible to spend a weekend in London... That said they had more seats to sell because they operated quite a big amount of flights... Nevertheless, quite impressive...

PMI isn't particularly important for LH, but as the "17th State of Germany", it's an excellent destination for a gimmick flight. A quick bit of sun and fun in a sunnier climate, coupled with two flights on the new A380, plus some sort of surprise programme at the destination. Where else can you have that much fun for 99€?

That said, they could have sold flights to more or less anywhere and they would have filled up quickly. Mallorca probably just seemed easiest to market.

This is not a regularly scheduled flight. It sounds like a one-off training flight like so many others they have been doing all over Europe. Unlike AF who chose just one airport for their training flights (LHR), LH is taking the opportunity to garner a bit of publicity by flying it to various destinations that will otherwise never see an A380. Sounds like a smart move.

Germany is big enough with 16 states... We spaniards visit Berlin a lot and we don't claim it as "Spain's 18th State". Money CAN'T buy everything, and those comments doesn't make Germans very popular over these lands...

@ kelual: I am sure it wasn't meant like this - "17th State" is just an expression often used in Germany in an ironic way due to the fact that we are reguarly flooding your island, sometimes in a rather ugly way (no, I am not refering to white socks in sandals but rather to behaviour).

I would have thought, that the Spaniards would have learned to accept the early morning rush to tag sunbeds by now?

The Spaniards don't care. It's the Britons who fume when they show up at noon.

Very smart decision to offer another special A380 event. LH's giant will show up in countless Spanish newspapers and numerous TV shows.

Oh, calm down. Do you think anyone seriously wants to "claim" anything? And even if, it's not justified to talk about "you" and "we" in general. The saying is meant humorously because MILLIONS of Germans visit the island per year.

Exactly, it was meant as a joke. And that is why I put quotation marks ( ".................." ) around it.

German media too - anything to do with Mallorca usually attracts the attention of Bild and RTL.

LH has been extremely smart and fantasticly successful in milking their A380 EIS for all the publicity it's worth. Did you see the TV coverage of the delivery flight to Frankfurt? It was basically a three-hour advertisement for Lufthansa, and all of it free!

No, I wasn't able to watch it, unfortunately. But LH's new flagship also got lots of attention in Bavaria and Munich in particular:

60 billion € debt, more than half of the population not working, and bad weather. No surprise the Spaniards don't want it.

In the UK they would very much be an also-ran. LHR sees so many A380s (SQ, QF, EK, AF) in scheduled service that they wouldn't be able to generate the kind of publicity they seem to be going for. Besides, AF's A380 flights across the Channel probably took care of whatever demand there was to fly on an A380 for the heck of it.

It might make sense to head to an UK airport that has not seen an A380 yet, but I don't really the the market for it. MAN is out since EK has A380s in scheduled service from there, so that leaves BHX, or maybe one of the Scottish airports.

Ooh, I know, they could send one to DUB to piss off O'Leary: "Mine's bigger than yours!"

And most of the second one as well. Flying the national football team to the World Cup in South Africa and back on the A380 was also a really good idea. As I said earlier, LH has been very clever in milking the A380 for all the publicity it's worth - nobody else got this much mileage out of it, not even SQ as the launch customer.
