Interesting summer for KLM - where nearly every flight will be operated with MD11 equipment

YVR: daily M11

YYC: 6 weekly M11 (from 5 weekly A332)

YUL: daily M11 (leaving airplane in YUL for 5 hours!)

YYZ: Daily M11 (replaces B744) & Daily B772 (replaces 3 weekly M11).

Very interesting!

Great news!

If we fail to say "so long!" to IL-86 this October - we could do so in respect of MD-11. Nice bird.

Good choice, fly the MD11, which burns comparatively a lot of fuel, to some of the closest long haul destinations.

Interesting indeed, why did they make this move and how does this effect the current MD11 schedule to the Caribbean and South America?

YVR and YYC aren't among the closest longhaul destinations. YVR has used MD-11 for quite a while as there's minimal premium demand and the MD-11 has the smallest J cabin of the KL longhaul fleet.

Many of KL's US, African, Middle East and Asian destinations are closer to AMS than YVR or YYC.

Just 3 examples -- Chicago, Nairobi and Delhi:

AMS-NBO 3597 nm
AMS-DEL 3443 nm
AMS-ORD 3580 nm

AMS-YYC 3882 nm
AMS-YVR 4174 nm

To our Canadian a.netters: You are so lucky! I long for the day the three-holer will be placed on the ORD route. Hopefully I'll catch a photo while I'm in YUL next month.

There's nothing quite like a trijet.

It will be great to see the mighty MD-11 at YYZ on a regular basis but I am sad to see the blue whale go! I think KL 's 744s were the last regularly scheduled 747 service to YYZ.

I plan to fly to BUD next summer so I will definitely fly KL so I can experience the MD-11 before they go for good.

Burns quite a bit less than the 744 which is also used to Canada at times.

AF sends the 747 during the summer.

I thought AF used the A343 to YYZ this past summer but I may be wrong.

They are also used to the Caribbean and South America, not the closest long haul destinations (more like in the middle, like YVR and YYC). The MD11 is KLM's "leisure" jet, for destinations that need only few WBC seats. Apparantly this is the case for the Canadian destinations. The MD11 has 24 WBC seats, the 744 42 and the 772 has 35 WBC seats.

Indeed, I wonder about that too. I wouldn't mind to see the 744 back on the PBM route though...

Yes, CUR will probably stay as is (744 destination). I don't see that changing in the coming year or two but then again who knows.
