Noticed this photo in the database and a comment to the effect that this is the 744 in SAA colours and that it will be gone in a month:

Does anyone know if this aircraft is still operating commercially for South African and what routes it will be on until it is finally removed from service?

Also, isn't this not the first time that SAA has pulled the 744 from service?

Thanks in advance!

Yes it is still in service flying to LAD, LOS, ACC and extremely rarely to LHR.
SAZ and SBS are the two that remained from a previous fleet of 8 aircraft. SAV and SAW are now BCFs at CX and SAK, SAX, SAY as well as SBK are now at UN. SBK served some time at DT prior to going to UN.

Hope it helps and please someone correct me if I am wrong.

It taxied out to runway 03L when I landed in JNB on Friday afternoon. This morning the bird was parked on the "other side" of the C-apron at the maintenance hangers. When I boarded for my flight back home, this afternoon, she was being towed towards the international gates, presumably as SA flight SA60 to LOS.

Hmm...can't seem to find it in the schedules for this weekend at all! Was thinking of non-revving down to JNB just to get a last ride on this bird.

Thanks for help!

Ok found it....it's on SA 60. LOS...the only destination that I can't go to. Wish they were doing some more JNB-CPT hops

Good luck! With the sheer number of airlines flying that route, and the huge amount of traffic associated with it, there is a need for many flights with smaller a/c, as I am sure you well know. That being said, I remember flying CPT-JNB in the 90s on a 747! However, I was too young to remember a) if it was regularly scheduled, or b) what type it was.

Been lucky to fly on these SAA 744's many, many, many times between South Africa and the USA/Europe in my life...while I love the A340s, it will be sad when that last SAA 747 is gone!

Was glad to see one of the SAA 744's whilst transiting through JNB back in June.

Used to love flying those birds on the LHR-CPT run in the good old days of SAA...fantastic service up in Business Class with those big leather flat beds...all now sadly very much consigned to history

My favourite will always be, my first SAA 744 ride, -SBK The Great North. Walking down the steps of that great jet into a sunny Cape Town morning always made me happy

It will be a very sad day when the last 744 abandons SAA. As much as I find the A340 a formidably gracious bird, the 747 is the quintessence of SA's fleet! When I was a kid living in Luanda, I used to stand for long periods of time outside my house without taking my eyes off the airport until I saw (and heard) the colorful Springbok shooting for the sky! The feeling down my spine....Oh dear, I knew then and there aviation was my thing! A good bunch of memorable flights on SAZ as she ferried me and my family on the LAD-LIS-LAD hops as well! Oh well, that's life.....
Still have my fingers crossed that someday a 748 might come along

Is there any confirmation of the retirement date?

Only ask because I scored J-class award tix IAD-FRA-LOS-JNB-CPT on December 26th and itinerary showed a 744 operating for SA LOS-JNB and I'm super-psyched if the 744 is still in service - otherwise the LOS stopover suddenly becomes a completely unnecessary nightmare  Wow!
