Airlines plan growth in Fort Lauderdale

According to today's Sun-Sentinel Article...

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/business...ort-growth-20101011,0,356485.story

Airlines will put 7.7 percent more seats into the market served by Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in the 2011 first quarter, airport officials said Monday. Beginning in November, the airport will offer new or increased nonstop service to 46 domestic and international destinations for the winter of 2010-11.Through August, 15.2 million passengers came through the airport in 2010, a 4.7 percent increase over the same period a year earlier.

Not much details in the article but I guess it's a good sign of maybe things to come that have yet to be announced?

Any idea how much of this is just South Florida seasonal traffic returning from last year?

According to the Sun-sentinel That will coincide with the seasonal upswing in tourism and travel to South Florida, which is also served by major airports in Miami and West Palm Beach.

Good to see any airport gaining more seats maybe the economy is starting to come around. Any chance that FLL or any other airport in Florida will gain wide body service in the future?

Has there been any talk LATELY about FLL getting one of the two shorter runways lengthen to accomadate something morre than a twin beech or EM120?
You know...like an A319 or 737.....something like that........before more flights get shoved down FLL's throat.

When an airport sets its rates for the new year they often ask the airlines what their plans are for capacity at the airport for the upcoming year. I don't know how accurate it is, but it's not baseless.

FLL is seeing lots of new flights, and I daresay quite a few more are in the pipeline. You've got G4 adding new stuff like SAV, B6 adding more Northeastern markets (BDL and DCA), WN adding all over the place (MHT, BDL, MCI, PHX), plus additions from AA (JFK) and WS (YQB). I wonder how long til NK starts expanding (after the IPO), WN/FL tries some Caribbean flying, or BA comes to town.

Flying in the middle seat of coach is much better than not flying at all!

MIA is booming with new long-haul flights: Transaero to Moscow in two weeks; Air Berlin to Tegel in three weeks; Corsairfly resumes service in December, now year-round; TAM adds a fifth daily flight to Miami in December as well; KLM to Amsterdam tenative for January; Delta to London in March; a second daily AA flight to Madrid in April; Arkefly to Amsterdam in June. Plus Turkish is probably coming back in late 2011.

MCO is losing Martinair in January, but gains Air France in June.

TPA is seeing British Airways go daily in the spring; while FLL is seeing a third weekly flight by Condor at around the same time.

PBI often gets 767 widebody scheduled service during high season from Delta to ATL

Having read a bunch of stories on this topic....I believe FLL has already begun plans to expand the south parallel runway to make it long enough to handle almost any FLL traffic. This is a multi-billion dollar project expected to take at least 10 years.

Your right, MIA will have more long-haul flights next year than in its entire history. Though i wonder how the new KL service will affect LH's DUS service?

Back in the day, Eastern and Delta flew L-1011's into FLL. Of course MIA had the lion's share of widebody service.

I'm Zippyjet & I approve of this message!
