US Airways Terminal Move In MSY

A friend of mine at US told me that later this month the airline will be moving from Concourse A to Concourse B at MSY. This is actually a move that has been planned for a couple of years now. Concourse A will be left without any tenants...Concourse B is the current home of WN. US will be taking three gates at the far end of the terminal where CO used to have its ops from before they move to D. Currently US offers 13 flights/day from MSY..7 to CLT, 4 to DCA, and 2 to PHL.

This move makes a lot of sense. I'm sure the concession vendors on A were not able to make any money with so few flights operating out of that concourse. It should also save money if they can shut off utilities in A and shut down the security checkpoint. Wonder if they'll demolish it?

I guess with Concourse D getting six new gates closing the aging six gate Concourse A makes perfect sense!

So will the concourses get renamed and A be destroyed?

I wondered about that when I was at MSY a year ago. The end of B with a few gates was cordoned off, and A had to have its own security checkpoint for just US Airways. It seemed silly to me. Did TSA want this move?

I think it must be a combination of the airport on a whole coming to its senses along with vendor complains. Now, they can shut power off from that side and moth-ball the place until they decide what they are going to do.

A little OT but I wonder if they will move all the airlines currently in T1 to T2 at RDU once construction is complete. It seems there will be plenty of space for eveyone to operate out of T2.

I personally wish PHX had a flight on US. I think HP did that at one time? WN probably does currently. Any other carriers ever do it?

HP did for a while but never resumed after Katrina. Southwest has a couple of daily flights to PHX.

Last I heard it will not be demolished.

Eventually once Concourse E is built (supposed to be 5 or 6 gates from the renderings I've seen) across from D a few years down the road, I would "guess" that B could be closed off as well. It makes sense to eventually re-locate all the airlines to the newer areas of the airport.

A and B always had unique security checkpoints. Not that long ago, A was home to NW, US, US Express, and AA. B had WN, AA, and CO. So there was a lot more activity down there, say, in the mid 90's, than there is now.

HP flew MSY-PHX once or twice daily depending on the season. I'm surprised US never brought it back.

Just as an update, the move is complete. US is now using gates B10, 12, and 15 at MSY. It'll be strange not seeing the US planes parked at the end of A right next to the access road.

Isn't A where WN used to be back in the 90's?

That makes no sense. Why build the E concourse when there are plenty of empty gates in B?

WN has always been on B as long as I can remember.

B might only have one empty gate now, or maybe none. Southwest leases 5 or 6 gates even though a couple of those aren't used very often...US has three...and a couple of former gate areas (such as B1, B6) have had their space occupied for other uses, such as the expanded TSA checkpoint in the case of B1, and the food court in the case of B6.
