KLM 777 & SFO

Has KLM ditched the MD-11 on the AMS-SFO_AMS route? I first noticed that when my frlight from CDG arrived at SFO and i could see a KLM was right behind us. When we got closer to the gate I realized it was a B-777. The last couple of weekends while driving on US 101 around 1-2PM I tend to glance over to the gates and i do see a KLM B-777 and BA, VS, AF B747.

I think MD-11 is used for winter schedule and 777 for summer but I may be wrong on that. I remember seeing MD-11 at SFO during January/February time frame of which makes me believe it is seasonal change.

The MD-11 was present during the summer also, but lately more so than not, its been the 777.

This is my observation being based out of that terminal.

During the summer schedule KL needs more capacity on KL0605+0606 AMS-SFO-AMS than the M11 offers. That is why KL switches to larger size aircraft for the summer period. Last summer and the previous year 744 (full-pax) were used. This summer KL utilizes 777 on the route: 4x weekly 77W and 3x weekly 77E (Tu., Th., Sat.)
For the 2010/11 winter schedule KL will switch back to M11 on this route.

When does winter schedule and summer schedule start and end. Am thinking we are in October and the 777 is still being used. However I was surprised to fing out the AF had 2 flight a day and the second was on an A340. tok that one as it's one of the few metals that am yet to fly in. netw target get a flight on an A380. The other 2 MD-11 and B 717.

At least for Europe based airlines, the summer schedule traditionally starts at the last weekend in March and ends the last weekend in October (Sat. summer-schedule ; Sun. winter-schedule). This years summer schedule will end Oct. 30th and until then you will see KL 777s on a daily basis at SFO.

The second AF seasonal 343 service, did operate just 3x weekly, NOT daily. It operated only June through August to meet the peak summer season demand.

For the Winter 2010/2011 Season, it's split-up as follows:

MD11 between 31oct10-28feb11 daily
772 between 01mar11-25mar11 days 2-5 only, rest of days M11

For Summer 2011, planning is:

772/77W 27mar11-13aug11 daily
744 14aug11-29oct11 daily
