Hi, did BA ever use a 744 with a Tartan Tail @ LGW. BA had 4 744's with Tartan Tails, NLI, IVO, IVW, & IVZ. I never saw a BA744 with a Tartan Tail @ LGW, & Im just curious if a Tartaned Tail 744 ever operated a LGW service. Many thanks if you can help me. Kind regards, Timetable

I do remember seeing them at ATL in the late 90s, which is a number of years prior to BA switching to LHR.

They certainly did, IAH saw BA 744s through out much of the mid-to-late 90s. This was the most commonly seen " world tail" at IAH, though others made their way to ol H-Town.

Au contraire! Just checked my slides - no sign of the tartan (or the "burning crucifix" as it was interpreted by some religious reactionaries in certain states of one of the destination countries!) but I have the Australian scheme as in reply 3, plus Waves of the City (and the basic Landor grey/blue).

erm... I defintiely operated on the 744's and some 747 classics whilst I was based down at LGW between 1998-2000.
A few routes included:
IAH (as mentioned)
LOS
CCS
BGI
ANU
MIA
NBO
MRU
SEZ
DFW
PHX
MEX
GRU
GIG
EZE
Never recall the tartan tail aircraft being down there though, so they must have all been LHR based a/c
I think one or 2 of the 737's had the tartan tail though!?

Entebbe
Dar es Salaam (via NBO)
Orlando
St Lucia

Interestingly, I flew to Mauritius from Gatwick on a BA 747-200, the outbound was via Nairobi but the inbound (on a different day) was direct.

Did BA permanently base any 744s at LGW or did they switch between LGW and LHR

I do remember seeing a tartan tail at Gatwick back in 1998 but can't remember if it was on 747!

As of early June 2000 BA had a substantial fleet of at least 13 744s based at LGW. It included G-BNLC, 'LD, 'LN, 'LR, 'LU and G-CIVD, 'VF, 'VG, 'VH, 'VI , 'VS. 'VU and 'VV. None of these wore the Benthone/Mountain of the Birds tartan livery

There were two 734s in Benyhone livery, one that also operated out of LHR from time to tiime (G-DOCA), the other a permanent member of the LGW fleet (G-BVNO) having come to BA as part of the Dan-Air fleet:

However you are probably remembering the 772, G-VIIR which has been a permanent member of the LGW fleet from the day it was ferried from PAE to LGW on delivery up to the present day:

oh, they very surely did! I flew on a 744 from LGW to Sao Paulo and back from Rio de Janeiro to LGW (which was the same flight with a stopover in Sao Paulo), back in the winter 97/98 (I was 9 years old then).
