Qantas... Why No 744F's?

Why doesn't Qantas use their own fleet of 747-400F's? It seems they've been leasing 2 from Atlas for years now. If they have such consistent demand wouldn't 2 747F's be a good option? And they have plenty of 747 qualified pilots.

Well its only cost $150mil+ to have purchased a 744F.
The ACMI leasing lets them get aircraft without any of the ownership headaches.

Its likely the whole QF freight business model would be very different if it had to support the added ownership and operational cost of having your own equipment. As I recall in 2005 or 2006 QF did review getting its own widebodies but the numbers and business risk did not make sense.

So for now the leases work better. They also have ATSG 767SF freighter leased from the US.

p.s.- its 3 Atlas birds they currently use.

QF knows that Atlas knows far more about freight and logistics than it ever will and its arrangement with Atlas enables it flexibility that a fledging operation of it own never could.

That would be nice, similar to what BA is doing with the 748. Are there aircraft dedicated to the QF contract or are they moved about from contract to contract?

I wouldn't be surprised if Atlas decided it was best for them to keep their own paint and advertise their own company while flying someone elses freight. Thanks everyone for the answers.
