According to the french-speaking magazine "Jeune Afrique"( no.2596 OCT.10,2010 page 08), here are the real reasons why the Congolese FILAIR Let-410 crashed on Aug. 25th :
" a pax boarded with a crocodile hidden in a duffle bag for resale; the animal escaped while the plane was starting its descent to the regional airport of Bandundu in Congo.
Panic on board, the frightened flight attendant ran into the cockpit and the rest of the pax followed her"
20 persons died including the belgian captain who was also the owner of the regional airline; only 2 survivors 1 pax critically injured and .... the crocodile
Magazine also mentionned that it was the survivor testimony and there was also a video seeing the crocodile leaving the plane after the crash but that I coud not find
So it is true ? or not ... Waiting for your comments

Tragic if true.
It could certainly cause a crahs if all aboard rushed to the front of the plane, upsetting the CofG balance which may have resulted in not enought elevator authority to overcome the nose down moment. Thats why you should keep yorur pet in a cage

Quoting Bennett123 (Reply 4): Apart from the CoG issues, the cockpit would have suddenly become very crowded.
Most likely they all didn't make it inside the cockpit but crowded the aisle in the forward section of the plane.

I really hate animal smugglers and owners of exotic and/or vicious pets.
Owners of large lizards, snakes, pit bulls and rottweilers always terrorize innocent bystanders and cause accidents.
Not sure if this story is true but it's totally believable.

If it was in a duffel bag how big could it have possibly been?

Back in the 80's CO had a kid smuggle a boa constrictor in a duffle bag aboard one of its IAH-EWR flights. The snake escaped and wrapped itself around a womans leg and bit her husband. Despite numerous pleadings the captain continued on to EWR with the snake on the ladies leg because "It seems happy there and doesn't want to go anywhere else".
When they arrived at EWR the fire department came on and blasted the snake with a fire extingusher and the snake released the ladies leg.
A few months later they were in Harris County court, suing CO for damages and emotional abuse.

Big enough to scare the hell out of most people.
Even a 1 foot long baby crocodile is strong enough to bite off your finger.

Double-standards!
I'd be happy too wrapped around a woman's leg if she was cute.
Yet if I did just that, the captain would immediately land at the nearest airport and have me arrested.

She and her husband had a good case but think it should have been against the bastard that smuggled the snake on-board.

I think the couple that had the snake wrapped around the womans leg won $300K for their ordeal.
The reason they sued is that the Captain didn't land somewhere immediately so the snake could be removed. According to witnesses the woman screamed all the way to EWR.
I agree with you, the kid should have been sued to. But you know the rules of being a lawyer, go after the deep pockets first!

Which means the couple actually got $20,000 after all court cost and lawyer fees.

I would have screamed too!
I am terrified of snakes!
I hope the POS that owned the snake went behind bars.

I would have been screaming for a knife! I would have cut that sob off of my leg if I had to or twisted it's damned head off! Ever see that stupid movie "Snakes on Airplanes"?
It's too bad people didn't just stomp the damned crocodile but I guess panic overcame them. What a shame.

Talk about a freak situation!
As to using a knife, don't forget we can' t even bring on a tiny penknife on aircraft because of the tiny number of terror acts.

Not to mention if you had bitten her husband you would have been locked up for life!
