I wanted to post in the old KLM 787 topic, however, I was not able to.

According to [http://forum.scramble.nl/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=68067]this website forum[/url], Dreamliner will be visiting Amsterdam Schiphol on the 6th of November and Paris Charles de Gaulle on the following day.

Is it a sign of something to be announced next week? Dare I say - AF/KLM Dreamliner order??

Maybe "just" a customer presentation ahead of a potential order. But that vist would be pretty spectacular. I wonder which Dreamliner Boeing will send - I bet it will be Dreamliner 6 because of the GEnx-engines.

Hmmmm interesting. Should be nice for more people on the other side of the globe to get a look finally. (The ones that never saw it at Farnborough anyways)

Would make a good excuse for a day trip to CDG.

Well KL was a 787-8 customer via leases from RBS Aviation Capital...

Speaking of which, I'd be interested to understand why RBS AC dropped their 787 order when they had a customer whom reports at the time stated still wanted to take delivery? I mean I could understand if they liquidated their entire order book due to the problems RBS Group had during the GFC, but they kept their 737-800 order (with 40 more frames left to be delivered).

Think we might consider this as the first ''potential'' customer related visit? As we all know, its more about when instead of if AF-KL will order the 787, still interesting though!

These airport visits are not just a flyover are they?
Where do they park the aircraft? Is it usually not in a remote non-viewable part of the airport?

Do they do test taxi runs? What else?

CDG is huge. Aside from the parallels where Concorde is, it's rather difficult to get to the runways and taxiways. Even Air side, so many terminals and gates it's rather difficult to see an aircraft unless we have proper information on hand.

It's no secret that KL wants the 789. AF has been playing it close to their vest what they want, so who knows...

Damn... I leave for a vacation on the 5th!   Oh well, I'm sure I'll more opportunities to spot the 787 at AMS.

IIRC it was the 789 they ordered.

Indeed, at least for KL it's just about a done deal.

The plane likely will go to the maintenance areas for KLM / Air France after clearing customs and immigration. Taking the airplane to private property allows the airplane to avoid any problems with security since flight test airplanes usually have equipment and people on board that do not meet airport security requirements.

Also, taking it to the maintenance facility where there are engineering offices allows executives and managers from the airline to go on board the airplane and take a closer look.

Quoting MadameConcorde (Reply 7):

I doubt there would be any taxi runs or anything else. Although a flight test airplane, there is no need to do taxi tests at an airport like CDG unless they are towing the airplane to check fit at gates (like how the A380 prototype visited many airports to check for spacing and taxi/gate clearance). They might try to show it to the public some for publicity sake, but things like that are usually for air shows.

If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

With out some firm orders announced, I certainly hope these visits at least allow for ETOPS testing along the way. A customer visit is nice to develop potential sales, but a test bird's primary mission is to move the certification clock forward.

Let me add to my previous comment, that i don't rule out the A350 at all, although i really have to say im not as certain as before. I imagined the 787-9 and A350-1000 together to play a big part in the future of KL's fleet, but now that Boeing is likely to design the 777NG, i think it will be a very though battle between the two manufactors!

Nice news. I will try to visit the Airport if I can make it. About a possible order: I think AF-KL will for sure order quite a number of Dreamliners. I also am almost evenly convinced they will order A350's as well. But I have no clue how the numbers of such order (if they actually materialise) would look like. More B787's then A350's, an even split or more A350's then B787's? I would guess the first option is the most likely, but that is pure speculation on my part.

Or a presentation in hope of an order... That plane needs PR after all delays, cancellation of orders and setbacks... And as somebody said, they do it in connection with ETOPS testing or something...

Yeah....like it's being enforced...I guess only the freaks parking next to the fence close to the taxiway between CDG1 and CDG2 risk a fine since they might distract drivers passing by in their backs and cause an accident
