With a pseudonym like kaitak, you hardly need to guess my reaction. I'm delighted, not just because it's a new order, but because it marks the end of the nightmare for Cathay; its first order since the Asian crisis began/ended. This is only the beginning. According to this month's Aircraft Illustrated (a UK magazine), Cathay is going to make quite a big order before the end of the year, between the A340-600 and 777-300X.
My toast to Cathay is tinged with the sadness that this is one Cathay jet I'll never get to fly in!

I had the pleasure of flying on the 773 from HKG to KIX - WHAT AN AEROPLANE is all I can say. The most purring and gentle sounding engine I've come across. However, while CX will undoubtedly exercise outstanding options for 777-300s (its -200s are expected to go, unfortunately - they are too close in size to the A330s), its next competition is for a long hauler and Cathay was not pleased when Boeing announced GE exclusivity for the -300X. The rumour is that the -600 will get the order.
Expect to see that one before the end of the year.

I am very pleased with this too!! Not just because I like Cathay Pacific, but I agree with you CX747, it still proves that the 747 isn't stopping. That 747 just keeps going, while the 777 is falling behind. Thanks CX747!!!!

I was talking with our resident Cathay follower and he has told me that Cathay is more interested in a 747-500. That is a 747 with FBW, new engines and wing. They are supposedly pushing Boeing very hard for this.

I am also a fan of Cathay. I am delighted not only because Cathay is placing more orders (to enhance its future's commitment and competitiveness), but also there are many people who are 'in love with' Cathay so much.
Can anyone please tell me when and where will the B777-200 go?? and will they order more B777-300 or perhaps B777-300X?? I want to get an up-to-date news.

You're right except for the fact CX uses GE/Snecma engines on it's A340's!!!! CX is already a GE customer!!! Besides, there will still be a lot of commonality with the 777 fleet and the economics of the -300X are pretty amazing.

While Cathay has been displeased with the 777-300X engine choice, they sure do love the 777. It had been rumored during the Asian crisis that the 4 777-200s might be sold. It never materialized so I would expect them to continue operating from their Chek Lap Kok home. The current order seems to be a 747-400 replacement but it is curiously noted that the aircraft being considered are the 747-400/777-300X/A340-600! Currently the Cathay fleet stands at
