According to an article in El Colombiano AA wants to operate flights between Miami and Medellin. Right now this isn't possible until at least Oct. 2002 due to the bilateral agreement between the USA and Colombia. At the present time, carriers from the USA only can operate flights to Bogota, Cali, Barranquilla, and Cartagena.
Yesterday Avianca began non stop service between Medellin and JFK 3 times a week (I think for the summer only).
Also Spain and Colombia are negotiating an open skies agreement. Colombia want more Spanish carriers to operate flight to tourist cities such as Cartagena, Santa Marta, and San Andres.

It be a nice destination for AA to expand too. Aces currently flies a daily A320 on MIA-MDE and Avianca operates MIA-CTG-MDE-CTG-MIA daily as well. There is defintley demand for this service, though I don't see AA going between now and October 2002 without adding another Latin destination. I say Cartagena (which is the only one of the four Columbian cities they can fly to which they don't fly too), Valencia, Barquisimeto, or Iquitos.

I think another interesting topic here will be whether Delta starts service to secondary Latin American cities from Atlanta. They've already proven that the concept of feeding ATL's flights to major Latin American cities does indeed work, and it works quite well.
Now that Delta serves the major Latin American markets, the question is whether there will be a second round of expansion into secondary markets, such as CLO, BAQ, TGU, etc. These markets are what separate American from the rest of the pack in the Latin American region.

I think the US / Colombian air treaty is quite restictive. DL received the only available authority for its new ATL - BOG route last year and was faced with strong competition for the authority from CO who wanted to fly from IAH to Cali I believe. May be a few more years before we see the US - Colombian market opening up more.
Perhaps, we'll see DL move in on routes like Quito and Guayaquil. Will probably see Montevideo when / if they get authority for JFK - GRU - or perhaps, sooner as a tag-on to their EZE flight. Can't see them trying Bolivia after CO's experiment there which was halted by disagreements with the Peruvian govt over rights on the LIM- Santa Cruz sector.

If more liberal agreements or open-skies treaties could be worked out, I think that the number of flights and number of cities seeing south american service would greatly expand. On the other hand, so much has to do with the ecnomic conditions in south america - due to the recent crisis in Argentina, CO is having second thoughts about its new service to Buenos Aires and would like to delay commencement of the route; amazing, CO for so long has wanted to fly that route and now, when it finally has the authority, it is not sure if the economics will work.

DeltaSFO, American serves the secondary markets because thier hub is in a city that can support them on O&D. I don't know any figures, but I doubt much of the traffic on AA's MIA-CLO flight (which, I THINK is the only non-stop service between the US and Cali) is connecting. Most Americans just want to visit Bogota, Caracas, Buenos Aires, etc. The big cities. It's people in South Florida and New York City that visit Barranquilla, Maracaibo, etc. I honestly don't see there being need for any more capacity on routes to most of these secondary markets, which rely almost entirely on O&D traffic out of MIA and JFK. Also, AA has made a big name for itself in Latin America and it's just going to be very hard any airline to get rid of that. Just ask United.

Here are some numbers on AA's Colombian market (from an article in El Pais):
Last year there was a 30% growth in the number of passengers on AA's MIA - Colombia flights. 3 million Colombians travelled on AA to Miami. Of that number 45% traveled to the United States (other than Miami), 40% to Miami and 15% to Europe.
