OS Re-Introducing Hot Meals In Economy & New Euro Seat

Austrian Airlines (OS) is introducing again hot meals. In statements, they commended the new rise in the service level: Nobody is flying an airline just because of the food, but food is a very emotional topic and in fact an inexpensive marketing instrument.

Facts:

Business Class - hot food at flights more than 60 min
Economy - hot food or snack at flights more than 120 min (except breakfast).

The food is prepared by the famous catering company Do&Co for all classes.

Austrian is also changing their interieur. They are getting newer, slimmer seats. This means that passengers get 10cm more leg room and the airline is able to add rows - and with the new seats Austrian will save 14 tonnes weight p.a..

I am happy to see Austrian going back to be an Airline with an adequate service - I really think that this is the right way for the "main carriers" in order to get a proper distinction to low-cost carriers. (Thank you Lufthansa)

What is you opinion? How was the service level changing at "your" airlines in time? I only remembered flying US-airlines (CO, UA) in the past (10 to 15 years ago), and being "not overwhelmed" by their on board service and customer service - but maybe this changed as well? The bad point about this experience is, that I did never choose an US-Airline again for my flights - maybe I should try it again!

Looking good, and yes, I like the idea of having a snack in the air!

Well it's a start.

I remember flying CGN-VIE r/t several times on Tyrolean in the mid-1990s and they served a really nice breakfast on this 80 minute segment. Then they were absorbed into Austrian Arrows (what moran came up with that name?) and the meals were discontinued and they started charging for water! Never flew them again.

I flew OS to the US in 2000 and their econ product was very good back then. I think it still ranks as one of the best economy meals I've ever expirenced.

I like the new seats and think they're needed, but I wish AUA kept the green color scheme. Nice to see that AUA is investing in its product and not just being content under Lufthansa's influence, though the seats do look somewhat similar to LH.

I love you, Austrian Airlines.
An inexpensive marketing instrument, I like that...
I don't care how bad the food will be, it's free food being served at your own seat, how cool it that!!

Let's just blame it on yields.

Good call! Even their cold meals in Y at least one and a half years back were superior to any other intra-European Y class meals (LX, LH, IB-BOB, SK-BOB) I experienced. It will set them apart from their competitors. The seat looks good as well, really a distinguishable design while not being as piercing as the green style (I actually like it, but many disagree).

WARNING! The post above should be taken with a grain of salt! Furthermore, it may be slightly biased towards A.

Nice seat. Which other airlines use this type of seat?

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

The seat design looks similar like the recaro seats LX has for their European fleet. I think OS and LX are the best intra-European carriers based on my experience.

OS has been one of the best short haul carrier in Europe (sometimes the best). I am glad they are going back to those delicious Do&Co offerings. And I have to say the truth, catering does make a choice when it comes to business travelling.

I am now based in Belgium and whenever I travel I try to avoid SN if there is the choice to take an airline with complementary food & drinks. Business travel is a hassle. A free drink and a sandwich can make a difference.

I hope BA will follow suite.

Next flights : BRU-ZRH-CAI (LX)/ BRU-FCO-TLV (AZ)

That sounds good! In fact, even if AUA is undoubtedly a first choice airline, their service become so poor that lately I am preferring to fly Niky on my frequent MXP - VIE trips.

all A319/20/21 and the B736/7/8 - so the "European fleet".
This seat type is exclusively for the LH group and also LH itself plus LX will get those Y-seats

The F70s and F100s will not get those seats - according to Mr Bierwirth/OS CEO there will be another interior change or the evaluation for a successor typ is coming earlier then expected....

There is also the cabin upgrade of the 76s and 77s in the pipeline .... also the last B76s will now be winglet equipped.

Currently bmi British Midland is refurbishing there mid-haul A320/321's with new interiors, new seats etc. The plan next is for the short-haul A319/320's to be standardised with a refreshed interior. I wonder if we could expect to see this seat type with bmi on there short-haul aircraft too?

You got a source for that? I take it the new seat is manufactured by Recaro. You have the model number? LX just recently replaced Y seats with Recaro 3510's. Are they replacing these? What about the convertible bus seats? They going?

when it comes to "choice of airline" in combination with "catering" I can tell you from my home market that people choose TK over any European airline whenever they can eventhough the prices sometimes are much higher. mostly the reason is the catering offer.
btw TK is also catered by Do&Co, great food and nice presentation... this will surely upgrade OS product!

yes, I know that the European fleet will get the new seats, my question was "in which of the A319s the new seats are installed already??"

was mentioned in the press and what I remember in the interview with the OS CEO Mr Bierwirth

yes, Recaro. I have no idea on the model-number of the seat.

Quoting pfletch1228 (Reply 14):

then this is the type which also is going to be installed on LH and on the mentioned OS aircraft. I am pretty sure LH will use the usual grey-yellow combination.

In total 4650 seats are exchanged on the OS fleet.
It also needs reconfiguartion of the overhead service units. Carpets are renewed and are now in a grey-red combination.

Also all the galleys are standarised.

there is a 5 minutes video available on youtube *click*

I personally like the new style of the cabin - comfortwise I will hopefully be able to check it out myself soon.

Yikes, that seat looks like a lawn chair. I can't imagine sitting in that for 5 hours...

Though good on them for the hot food.

Not correct. It's a standard Recaro seat available to anyone. And the entire LH European fleet (A319/320/321 and Avro RJ100) already has those seats. They were installed on the Airbus fleet 3 or 4 ago and on the Avro RJs about 2 years ago.

That is the same seat (or an extremely similar one) IB uses in its A319/20/21 fleet.

One question, since OS has been doing really badly (financially) the past few year, I suppose Lufthansa is paying for these or..?

However I am really happy to see these improvements, however I liked the old green seats! I hope they will also improve their in-flight entertainment!
