Landed at ATL just a bit ago (coming in from LGA) and there was what looked like a DC-9 or MD-88 missing its tailcone, elevators, and engines parked over at the TOC. Is it being cannibalized for parts? Or just in for some maintenance? Also, there was a Boing of some sort (757, 767, or 777) parked far over by the paint hangar that has an all blue tail, but the rudder has the widget on it. Is it coming into, or headed out of, the DL fleet?

This sounds like one of the 757s that's being returned to the lessor.

The MD88 most likely has the entire stab removed for repair. There have been some skin cracks found in the fleet over the past couple of years. The repair requires the tail to be removed. This is also true for the MD90.

I would assume maintenance of some sort. While I am not certain, I do not believe any cannibalization occurs at TOC in ATL. (I have no direct knowledge, but just several years of observation)

It's N926DH. One of the recently acquired MD-90's. I saw it yesterday and took a pic. I'll upload it later when I can. It was newly painted in DL colors and not only was nearly the entire vertical fin missing, it was wrapped up in a plastic tarp to protect it from the elements outside.
I also snapped a pic of N622DL which was at the extreme far eastern side with it's vertical tail (minus the rudder) painted over in preparation for return to lessor.

N926DH MD-90 at ATL TOC with much of tail removed. Yet to enter service.
N622DL at ATL TOC removed from service, pending return to lessor
Here are pics from the iPhone on taxi of N926DH and N622DL at ATL on Thanksgiving Day.

About a month ago I saw what appeared to be a DC9 parked infront of the TOC without engines, all I could make out was the a portion of the Registration and could tell that is was not a MD-88 registration. IIRC it was NxxxHC but the aircraft I was in was #2 for take off and moving rather quickly past the TOC. I didnt even get a picture and I had my camera phone in my hand, of all the time not to have a really long line for take off is when departing from 26L. Dammit
