I was looking around for possible trips I could take with my new DL award ticket, and a sample itinerary in March from PHF-MCO shows DC-9 flights to ATL! Does anybody know more about this? When does DC-9 service begin at PHF?

The -50s will be flying once daily to PHF for much of February, March, and April. They actually flew to PHF on Saturdays this past October, as well. Also of note, DL will be up to 4X mainline to PHF for much of January and part of February, but will be back down to 1-2X mainline after that period. DL also routinely upgauges on flights into PHF, so be on the lookout for an odd 73G or 738 thrown into the mix. Nice to see, for sure!

All nonstop flights are direct, but not all direct flights are nonstop!

I never got how people argued the closeness of PHF and ORF. DL does quite will in PHF. Way and I mean waaay back in the day there use to be a mox of CR2s and CR7s but for the most part it's either all CR7 service and a mix of mainline and CR7 during peak season.

Now it wasn't that long ago was it?? ATL-PHF used to be all EV operated, including the Ground handling personnel. BTW,Did PHF station change to Regional Elite as well??

DL has a lot of DC9-50 operating in ATL. The cities the DC9-50 serves from ATL are many and it changes by the month. I have seen them on HOU, CHS, SAV, CMH, IND.

I do wonder though how much the DC9-50 in ATL has to do with DL moving some MD-88 operations to MSP, I'd be willing to guess there is a direct relation to it.

A bit off topic, but it does appear that DL either needs a 100 seat Aircraft or more CRJ900/E-170...

Enter future ex-WN 717s...

There's nothing quite like a tri-jet.

PHF is still an ASA station. DL in ORF/PHF does really well especially when RIC has an IROP and can usually get everyone out of there. They get their mix of CR7, CR9, and MD88/DC9's coming up.

As of now, Diesel 9-50s can be had ex ATL to BHM, BNA, PNS, MEM, MKE, CMH, GSO, LIT, MSY, FNT, CHS, CLT, IND, GSP, EWR, DAY, DAB, GRR, HOU. So it's safe to say it is still quite easy to jump on a DC-9 if you really wanted to.

PHF still belongs to EV.

I don't know how long waaay back in the day means, but DL hasn't been in PHF for all that long. They just started looking into PHF when Airtran got interested. Waaay back in the day, the only airline even bothering to fly to PHF was USAir Express.

The flights are branded as Delta Connection, i.e. Delta's money. That's what I meant by Delta does well in PHF. Note I mentioned CR2s and 7s. What I meant was about 2006 and back it was a mix of more 50 seaters than 700s and now we see mostly 700s and 900s with an MD88 thrown in during peak season.

DL would have to wait several years. IIRC there are 89 717's. A figure like that can't be replaced anytime soon.

I'm in the camp that says WN will fly them for several years. The count is high enough for economy of scale, and WN can wait out the next bump in technology to replace them.

I don't understand everything I don't know about this.
