Just passing over head Lanzarote in the Canary Islands is A6-EWI on UAE212, routing shows IAH-DXB but why would it be so far South today? We are a LONG way down from the normal tracks across the Atlantic.

from the Island with sun and great photo's.. Why not visit Lanzarote

Good winds over Northern Africa today as well as the lower North Atlantic, so they probably decided to take advantage.

We see this quite often during the winter months due to the winds. We get a few CO, EK, and BA flights from IAH cutting across the southern atlantic when the winds are this strong.

The North Atlantic jet-stream is unusually blowing north-south to the west of the British Isles before turning east over the Pyrenees and northern Spain:

I am no meteorologist but I am guessing the southerly route of UAE212 is to take advantage of the favourable component of the jet stream and to avoid the unfavourable component.

It is this unusual positioning of the jet-stream that is bringing unseasonably cold weather to much of the western side of Europe. So while the maximum day time temperature in Madrid in November is 13C the forecast is for 6C on Sunday.
