Are These Potential Future EK Routes?

Hi all.

On a recent EK flight I noticed a few cities missing that didn't necessarily surprise me but made me think. SGN and HAN were the two that sprung to mind. I would expect SGN to have a service ahead of Hanoi. On wikipedia (!!!) it said SGN is a terminated destination for EK? if so when did they operate this route? Could SGN became a new destination shortly for EK - would it work for them? Maybe a few times a week?

Also, as I was travelling through cambodia, phnom penh (PNH) came to mind. I appreciate this could be years off yet but could this be a future route for EK, in perhaps 5/6 years with a twice/thrice weekly A332? And what about VTE (Vientiane)? I'd expect this to be even further behind.

AFAIK EK have never operated to Vietnam, but as you say, I'd be very very surprised if they didnt in the next year or so.

Ho Chi Minh City will get service first. I'm surprised they havent already, but guessing it must be a premium yields thing. No doubt there is enough traffic for a daily 77W at least, but yields not ideal I woudlnt have thought. Mind you Vietnam is expanding and improving its infrastructure a lot, lot of companies investing there and the days of it being just a backpacker low yield destination look to be numbered.

I'd guess we would see QR start it first with an A332, but i wouldnt rule out EK or even EY. If they link it to Paris flight it will do well.

What do you mean you dont have any bourbon? Do you know how far it is to Houston? What kind of airline is this???

EK did indeed operate into Vietnamback in the 1990s. The routing was DXB-SIN-SGN, think it was three times weekly on the A310s. The service ended when they suddenly lost traffic rights on the SIN-SGN sector.

However I think EK could easily make the route work non-stop now. There must be sufficient traffic between European ports and SGN to make such a connection work.

QR start what? Vietnam?

Well I'm sure you are aware that QR flies daily to SGN (4 non stop + 3 via BKK) and 4 weekly to HAN (via BKK) both with A332/A333 mix services and it connects well to all the European destinations. QR has also expressed its desire to launch PNH in the near future.

I hear that Vietnam does quite well for Qatar too...

I think Emirates would greatly benefit from the purchase of smaller widebodies like the 787-8 or 9 for services to Hanoi, Ho Che Minh City, proposed destinations like Phnom Penh and old destinations like Warsaw and in the future Copenhagen.

I could see another Chinese city in the network over the next few years-CTU or NKG for example; EK could probably make a few weekly frequencies work a la KL.

Again QR might be the first mover here. QR has officially announced they will launch 2 new Chinese destinations and by guesswork it could be CTU and XMN.

What about LED?

Big city with 5 mln population (and 1,5 mln more in catchment area), large oil industry, heavy industry (car, shipbuilding, metallurgy), culture destination, an every-year growing and getting richer middle-class.

With DME being double daily I see potential.
