Alaska Airlines today announced a tentative agreement on a new 3 year collective bargaining agreement with the company's 2,600 employees in the Clerical, Office and Passenger Service (COPS) group, covering Reservations Sales Agents, Customer Service Agents, etc.
Among the provisions in the proposed contract are wage increases, job security protections, improved productivity measures, a $1,500 signing bonus and participation in the Performance-Based Pay annual incentive plan.
Congratulations to the negotiating teams on coming to this agreement before the end of the year!

Thats great but they could have had job protections, participation in the PBP plan and raises without even going through negotiations if they had accepted their contract extension last year. In the end, I believe they left money on the table by pushing through negotiations. In any case, good for them for getting through all this and (hopefully) being able to put this behind them.

Personally, I agree - and so do many COPS members who were very angry the previous TA was voted down. They left a lot of money on the table in the form of:
- 1.5% pay increases starting in 2009 and again in 2010
- Payouts between the difference in 2008 Profit Sharing and 2008 PBP
- 2009 PBP
There's no way the annual percentage increases over 3 years under the new TA will equal or exceed what they could have earned previously.
And frankly, from a personal perspective, voting down the previous offer in 2009 sent a bad message since every other work group accepted the same basic agreement. It was like telling the other workgroups, "This may have been good enough for YOU, but WE won't accept it..."
Just my $0.02 worth of course. Either way, it's good that there's finally a TA for the IAM membership to vote on.
